I see that the best options were already advised to you ( updating facebook page regularly, open a twitter account and link it with your facebook page, get friends to like your page and ask their friends to like it too, etc.)
Other than this, I would suggest that if you have a blog or website, you post a follow us link that redirects to your facebook page. This can help, taking into account you have solid traffic of course.
If not, research what facebook optimization tools are out there.. similar to Klout for Twitter, for example.

If you're maintaining a Facebook page, it would be better if you'd use your personal account to personally spread the message to your friends and ask them to do the favor for you. That would be the most effective technique. But you may also use email marketing.

I prefer email marketing for promotion, collect good database of email marketing, and create a good page then send emailer, definitely you will get good result.

Personally, I tend to spend most of my time on FB as my fan page, reading content posted by related fan pages, commenting as my page when I have something relevant to say about a post.
