Starting a new site

I'm starting a new game news and reviews website, and I'm going to be the only writer, for a while at least. I'm not going the paid advertising route, however I'm not social in general, but I am going to have to deal with the social networks, for which I don't even have an account at the moment.

My idea of the social sites is pretty much what RSS does: you post an update when you post an article in your site. Does that reflect reality? If not, what exactly should I be doing at those sites? And what sites should I have accounts at?

Hey,

Could anyone jump in and post some opinions here, I am also eager to read your answers about this post.

I don't have a site, but I'am planning to create one.

If I were you, I'd take the time to post links to only certain articles/topics (the relevant ones). If you use RSS feeds, people can see that as spam and will automatically unlike your page or unfollow you.

(Speaking from personal experience here!)

Thanks! What do you mean by relevant links though? I mean, it's my site, whatever I post is relevant, how do I determine what's relevant for a social network?

@Fallout

Oh yes, I've visualized what you're trying to say.

I read some article about rss feeds to facebook wall or status page automation. And this really will flagged you as spammer.

So it's really better to manually post links to your relevant articles.

Posting a link to your new content on social media sites is the most basic way to use them. It can be somewhat effective - if you get followers on the social media sites who like your articles, that can be helpful both in getting viewers to your site and alerting the search engines that people like the content. But there is a lot more to social media.

I would suggest starting out with just 1 social media site (perhaps Facebook or Twitter, as they are still the most popular, as long as your visitors tend to hang out there too) and looking at what other people do with their pages. The ones I like most on Facebook post not only when they have a new article, but they also post useful tips and links to other sites as well. Find out what your audience likes, and give them useful information and links, and that will help build a following who will then most likely check out your website as well. It's all about relationships.

Start small with FB and twitter. Add the links to your forum sigs and start posting A LOT! Consistency really counts here. Over time you'll slowly generate fans and followers if you put out material people care about. Namely things that will help them make more money!

In Twitter, I've noticed that some people have conversations - is it appropriate? As those most people are PRs, and I'm not. I mean, posting links, and talking to some people (followers). Or is it appropriate to follow somebody AND talk to them? Like say Valve, just for example.

I think, what Fallout trying to imply here is you're doing somewhat like blog commenting. Commenting on article/topic (relevant ones) means related topic to your business/site.

Conversations with your followers are good, it's like showing to them that you care about giving valuable information, not just promoting your site. Beside Twitter, you can share your links to with social bookmarking like Digg, Reddit an Stumbleupon.

But doesn't that annoy the users that are simply following me, when I'm sending 5 messages to other users? I mean, they all see it in their tweet feed.

just start posting relevant content based on your website area, start off small, maybe have some sort of discussion area where users can give you feedback, maybe have a poll asking then users what you think they might want to see. Once you have a following then think about expanding, ie RSS Feed burner/SEO

What if, site owner is bad at relationships?
For example me, I'm very non-social person and I have no idea how to promote something.
I can work hard and do some certain job, but I'm really not able to promote something

If you are starting a new site then fist you must get it in to the public by adding to your social network sites like Facebook, twitter and Google+ which helps you to get more traffic to your sites.

You may be able to get some traffic from Facebook Open Graph. Give them a try.

I suggest posting links to social networking sites is better for your website. Auto posting can cause you some problems if someone ask you something.
