Social media, social networking ?????
Social media, social networking, Web 2.0,
There are a lot of terms fast-flying around that are hard to make sense of or understand.
* What do they mean?
* Should I get involved?
* How can they help me, or my business?

Social media: Participatory online media where news, photos, videos, and podcasts are made public via social media websites through submission. Normally accompanied with a voting process to make media items become "popular".

A social network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, sexual relations, disease transmission (epidemiology), or airline routes.

It will give your site free advertisement. And because this sites are always visited by lots of people, your site will have many visitors as well if it is well placed on social networks.
But right now, advertising in social networks are becoming like spams and that is social networking it is not the best way to advertise your website.

Traffic is traffic and people are at those sites. Any advertisement is good. At least it's being advertised. I just think about eyeballs. How many ways can I figure out how to get something in front of eyeballs asap.

And.. I know all this but I still don't even do it myself I played with technorati.com's once and it seemed pretty good for getting extra traffic.

Should read the new report out by Rich Schefren from Strategic Profits.com - his Web Marketing 2.0 discusses these issues in detail. The way the world is changing, if you are not socializing and marketing via Web 2.0, you are missing the boat. Most people joining a business or looking to purchase an item are doing so because they trust the seller/business. It's about getting back to being a person and a tangible item for people to communicate with. Although it's not as personal and true as a face to face meeting - marketing via social networks is the new way to go.

Social media describes the online technologies and practices that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other.
Social networking is a phenomena defined by linking people to each other in some wlay. Digg is a popular example of a social network ...
It's really depends on you... But I assure that It won't harm you
It would gain your traffic if you get involved on this...

An important word to stress in web 2.0 is " sharing." To make social media pay off from a business standpoint you need to provide information that your target audience finds useful, or if you're a one person brand write content which establishes yourself as an expert in your chosen field.
If you excel at what you do, and go about attempting to help people solve their own problems you build trust and their willingness to do business with you. I don't think this is a new idea, its called karma. With the technology available to everyone today its karma on steroids - karma 2.0.
I think its always good to include a possible real-life example. Maybe you sell plumbing supplies to plumbers. The majority of these guys are small businessman who may be great at their specialty but not in running a business . Write a blog tailored to the challenges faced by plumbers, with ways to implement solutions to help them run a more efficient business. Show that you're there not just to sell but to help.
Now I'm done with my rambling.

I agree with xeon and I absolutely agree that you will get a lot of traffic but will those traffic give you sales if you are selling something? If you want a lot of visitors then this is the right way to go but getting the right customers might be a different topic.
Targeting the right customers is the key to getting good sales. You could try SEO or article writing for your advertisements. Social bookmarking/networking is also advertising but as xeon said, there will be less conversions of visitors to become buyers.

Exactly! I got a lot of spams from myspace wherein the real owner doesn't know that its account has been used by some program to advertise ******. This is the reason why it is not a good way to advertise in these kind of sites for the maintenance is not very well manage.

Is there rules out there that show the line between spam and smo?
It seems so vague, like the site can block you because they think that you are spamming.
