if you are looking for traffic and backlinks, then social bookmarking should help you, if you are looking for spamming then try social networks!

It doesn't work, the traffic is pure trash and doesn't convert in most cases.

Traffic without sales, then social bookmarking and social networking works for you. But if you want to get sales from those visits, then these two forms of advertising is not the best way to advertise.

both of them work but are completely different & it depends on type of social networking. whether u consider SU that always work because that is made for sharing links. In orkut.com you can spam out & send links to friends...communities etc especially links related to india.

Yup! social bookmarking, social networking, StumbleUpon, hard to convert sales. But it's worth to increase your site awareness

For sure it works, for back links definately, but also for getting loads of traffic. The more traffic, the more exposure, the more chance of getting a sale or converting the visitor into a customer. By using social postings effectively you can get highly targeted web traffic and backlinks quite easily.
At the end of the day, those people who are not converting visitors to customers are doing something wrong. You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make it drink. You need to make sure that you sell yourself and your product properly. If you build links properly, posting in the right places, and on websites or with articles that are related to your content, you can get some serious traffic that converts.
Just simply submitting to thousands of places for backlinks is the stupid way of doing things, you need to be intelligent about it, and do it organically, slowly, and with thought behind every title and description you use on each site with the link back to yours. If you pre-sell yourself or your site effectively in your link, the people who visit already have an idea of what to expect. If what your site offers, is what is expected by the majority of visitors, then your visitors are going to convert to customers.

It really depends, I have tried both social bookmarks and directory articles.
Both have a short life traffic, and only good for BL.
I believe in two main sources of traffic that convert into sales:
1) Organic Search engines results on products queries
2) Organic Search engines results on contents
I think it also depends on which social bookmark you are working on, some could be a good spot, the majority are a waste of time.

It depends. With social bookmarks, backlinks are an obvious advantage. If submitted properly to the right categories, it can bring targeted traffic as well.
