I run a scan every night at midnight. It all started when the Conficker Worm was closing in on its April 1st "attack" day. I decided to start scanning daily and since then I haven't stopped. It's a good thing because it's caught some trojans a few times.

I say between running a scan daily and having Windows update automatically you have 99% chance of thwarting any attacks on your computer.
