How often do you scan computer for viruses?

How often do you scan your computer for Files that are in danger? or scanning for viruses?
Me? I do about every week, or something like that.
Especially when I download a new file, or ask if it helps, and not just a Virus File.

I tend to do it at least every night, along with a disk cleanup and defragmentation.

I like to make sure that my computer is in tip top condition.

I have my anti virus software scan scheduled to run on it's own every Friday night automatically. You do have to have the computer on for this plan to work.

When there's a virus thread I'll scan and update daily.

I have AVG installed and it scans automatically most of the time and I think it's good.
However, my computer and internet connection slows down.

Never.
I'm on a Mac so it's not my biggest worry.
However, one can already see that in the near future that will no longer be the case.

Not anal, just cautious.

I also have
-Spybot Search and Destroy run every day at noon = forced lunch break.
-Auto updates set in the anti virus
-software to stop web bugs

This conversation just reminded me, better run Ad-Adware.

Well I did hear that the more porn you surf the more often you have to scan for viruses. I don't know how true that is, but, that's what I heard.

It's more important to have a monitor antivirus program actively protecting the computer, rather than running scans.

A v-monitor can detect the threats as soon as they arrive to your computer, while a virus scan will detect them... well... upon scan

I have Nod32 monitoring the system all the time, it doesn't reduce performance at all. And it's scheduled to run in-depth scans once a week.

I use AVG and the computer will start scanning automatically around midnight if I'm still on and the computer isn't in standby. Other than that I never dl a file of any type without performing a virus scan, even if it's a trusted source.

A word of AVG: the new AVG is absolutely terrible and I'm considering moving to nod32 because of it. I used to like the fact that if you're a gamer you could shut down AVG in Task Manager Completely and rid your rig of background processes but this is not the case anymore.

Anyone know how many background processes nod keeps running and whether or not it can be completely disabled via either it's CP or Windows Task Manager?

With the basic services enabled (file monitor + auto update service) it runs 2 processes and it takes about 40mbs of your memory while it's running. I have the other Nod services disabled (firewall, email monitor, etc) because Windows Firewall works very well in Vista.

I never turn off NOD for playing games (which is something that I had to do with AVG, BitDefender and others), and never noticed any drop in performance or framerates. But yes, you can disable it by simply closing the NOD Control Center program if you're short of memory/CPU.

While doing in-depth scans the CPU usage goes up a bit, but the computer is still usable with decent performance.
