So, prevent is more important than cure. Even worse, some virus would not be formatted, you might need to fdisk your HDD if they reside in your FAT Tables.
BTW, I have not formatted my disk for 3 years so long.

I haven't reformatted my computers of laptops, ever. The only time I do is when I absolutely have to because of major hardware changes. I manage to keep my computers clean.

try to deepfreeze your boot sector so that when you restart your pc, all thing will be deleted, just save your work at the other partition.

I reformat only when upgrading to a new operating system. Make sure you scan USBs first before using them, they are well-known "carriers".
Use Firefox instead of IE. Avoid going to Warez sites and downloading software from file-sharing sites.
Make sure you update your virus definition files and use realtime protection.
Good antiviruses are Avira, Kaspersky, Avast, and AVG. Use one antivirus only.
For anti-malware, use SpyBot,Ad-Aware, or Malwarebytes

I'm formatting my PC when there is something wrong with my computer. Like if the speed of my computer is slow or having an undetected virus.

When I was using windows I dont think I ever had to format on my main computer.
Seemed like I was reformatting every time I saw the family during the holidays though.

does you system has antiivirus software? where do you get virus from internet or files shared from other system. When you are browsing the sites you need to more careful with the popups, Most time the users click by accident or getting attracted to the pop ups and end up with virus invitation
