I had the exact same problem but that's because of my own stupidity; I was trying to quantify whether or not Alexa is truly corrupt by installing their addon.
I noticed my Wordpress Blog was taking the longest to load as a result so I started shutting things off and as it turned out it was Alexa that was causing my FF issue.
Also, I've reverted back to FF 2 and haven't been happier.
EDIT: Check your task manager after closing Firefox to see if it's still eating up memory, I've seen FF (and only FF) do this once or twice in the past.

Maybe I should go back to that version. Google Chrome is looking pretty intriguing though...

That's very interesting and would make sense too.

Is everyone that is having the slow down using the same OS? How about similar CPU and Motherboard set ups? I'm still using FF 3.0.11 here so haven't had the pleasure of seeing it.
Could be a great number of things including hardware integration calls. Could also have to do with calls to updated information in the OS that some may have and others do not.
Just a few off the wall suggestions, if to much of a hastle though perhaps revert back to an older version, or there is Chrome, Opera, and Safari...

maybe the latest version of FF still has some bugs also sometimes when I close all of my FF browsers and I opened it again there is a message that says Fire Fox is running slow needs to restart computer. After that I didn't restart my computer instead I waited for several seconds or 1 min. before I opened up my fire fox again.

I just downloaded the latest FF update and now it's running slower than a month of Sundays again.
