Windows vs. Ubuntu
Well, the title kinda says it, Windows or Ubuntu?
I mean yeah Windows is the most common OS for people to use, but i honestly hate it! Not that I'm against Microsoft or something, but i don't like that it has very poor security. These days its very easy to create viruses, and spread them fast. Yeah, you can put an Anti virus program, but sometimes there can be a virus there! I think the safest solution will be Deep Freeze. And it's not just the security problem, it has other bugs, but, lets get back to the point. Windows - Not good ( poor protection )
Ubuntu ( Linux ) on the other hand, by my personal opinion, has a different and better security system. It works a lot easier, you can install very easy from Terminal, and its superb for programing. But, that just my opinion, lets here yours.
So - Windows or Ubuntu?????

Windows, because majority of the software in the world is made with Windows in mind.
Security wise, being popular makes you a prime target. Although MS has been working to get better security in recent versions. And it can be locked down with software, free or otherwise. (I just run Windows 7 with MSE and Windows Firewall).
It's really up to the users to be more careful about what they download and do on the net. I've had "Security Expert" friends who keep getting infected because they surf porn and refuse update their systems because they think "M$" is spying on them and "Noobs" who rarely get hit with anything because they surf sensibly and allow MS to update Windows.
2cents.

Software for professional usage is made for WINDOWS OS. For example: AutoCad, 3DStudio, Corel Draw, Photoshop, etc.
UBUNTU is nice for private business only, and may be replaced on your PC as second OS.

Depends on what you want to do with your computer...
I run Win XP on my desktop PC because I often use it to make music. (And unfortunately, the software I need to do that is programmed for Win OS...)
I got Ubuntu on my laptop because it's safer and I don't make music with my laptop. (Besides, Windows Vista used to cause some nasty blue screens on it.)

I *have* both. I more frequently use Ubuntu.
Got an "error"? Windows will be sure to tell you.
Got a real problem? Ubuntu will warn you before anything serious occurs.
I honestly hate the BSoD's and countless different error messages that Windows has to offer. I usually lose a few hours worth of work when I see these errors. If Windows were stable, they would not have had to have coded them all in the first place.
If you've actually got a problem, Ubuntu will warn you before anything happens. As an example: I had a hard drive that was imminent to failure. Windows warned me nothing of the sort - until it happened. Ubuntu told me before it happened, giving me time to back it up before it failed.
It's all about stability.

I mainly use Ubuntu now.
I had this laptop with Windows Vista, and hated it. I'm not sure if Vista works worse on certain systems (I know other people who love Vista), but for me it was awful - very slow, very buggy etc.
Hence I dual booted with Ubuntu, and mainly used Ubuntu.
I've now got Windows 7 and it's much better, but I still prefer Ubuntu.
I use Windows 7 for certain software that only works on Windows, though. Have never been a fan of WINE.

I've got a Toshiba laptop that came with Vista and I've definitely had issues. I want to try Ubuntu cause I've heard Linux flies compared to Vista and I seriously hate wasting resources on Vistas op sys.
DH Tristan, I'm thinking my backup if i do this would be a doubled setup like yours... has that caused you any issues so far?

No issues at all, nope It's the best of both Worlds IMO - I can run any script I want (on Windows ^^) and use the speedy Ubuntu for day to day use
One annoying thing is that, when re-installing Windows, it automatically removes the Ubuntu dual boot menu (meaning it then, by default, boots into Windows every time).
This is annoying, but it's easy enough to get back the boot menu, and once done once, is easy to do in the future
Just another of Windows (many) "fun" faults, lol!

LOL. Hey, it isnt a fault, it's a "feature".
If I end up trying this I may have to give you a shout about getting that menu back. Thanks for sharing that detail.

Yes that's true, it's Microsoft's "feature" to ensure people keep using Windows, lmao
Sure thing, feel free to get in touch if you need advise on getting it back.

I would recommend you get Windows 7 its a hell of alot better then Vista and alot faster then even Windows XP. If you bought your laptop within the last like 4 Months I think you are eligible for a Free upgrade to Windows 7.

I bought my laptop in 2008, so by tech standards it was of course outdated before I made it outta the store.
I've toyed with Win7... I dont think its that expensive, but I'm a bit gunshy about something thats been out such a short time. OTOH maybe a dual boot with Win7 and Ubuntu would offer a solution. Whatever the answer is, I just know it isnt Vista. Blech.

Well I'd have to say that I'm more comfortable on windows. There's no two ways about it. After all, I studied to use windows, I certainly do use it on a day to day base..but the one and only OS that I'm so keen on following and using is Ubuntu. I can do everything I can do on Windows from there, but I can do it for free. Also, when I first started playing with it, I felt lost. Not only because I haven't really used Linux before, but in a sence of lost in potential. Ubuntu desktop and server has the potential to take what ever Mac and Windows can deal out, but it can do it better. You have full control. To swop and change your OS to best fit your needs. I mean COME ON! What more can any Admin want? And then....the inevidable release that so many geeks like myself has been waiting for...Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7! AND SHOCKINGLY! I feel comforable on both...but! Windows 7 still looks and functions in almost the exact similar way that Vista did. That ticked me off. I mean dude! You tried the whole fancy look and it didn't work...you tried the whole Vista thing and it didn't work...NOW you want to go change a couple minor things and slap a new name and wrapper to it? COME ON DUDE! Ubuntu on the other hand brought in some new stuff...Cloud Technology is one of the many things they brought into play! I was so astound at the fact that a smallish company, that made no profit of selling their product could do something like this. I mean OMG!
My opinion...(although backed with a opinion and little facts...) is that Ubuntu, will one day reign terror into the heart of every windows and mac dev. The guys have been working their finger to the bone to constantly improve their os to a point where they've actually managed to have Ubuntu lovers and Windows Lovers quarrel online about it! The war is on...who will you back?

I use Windows and Linux at the same time. Of course, my main jobs based on windows platform while using Linux in simulating server environment.
