Smartphone vs. Dumbphone
Quote:
It took me forever to make the move to a smartphone. Considering the fact that I am usually drooling all over new technology, it took me an incredibly long time to jump on the smartphone wagon. I was perfectly content with my Samsung Messenger. Granted, I had nearly worn the letters off the qwerty keyboard, but it worked fine. Then I looked around and realized that I was the ONLY one left not using a smartphone. I owned a dumbphone. Ugggggggh! I wasn’t cool!

After reading the full article linked above (leave me comments please) I would love to discuss this topic with you. How many of you are using smartphones? Why? How many of you are using the so called, dumbphones? Why? How many of you refuse to carry a cell phone at all? Why?

I'm still using a dumb phone Cricket. Some say it suits me :-)
But, occasionally I drool over an iPhone (or Android), before reality returns and I remember that, as a freedom freak, I only turn my phone on when I'm out of my office and only then so that if something interesting happens I can photo/video it.
I take it to extremes (freedom I mean). If you ring my office phone and I don't recognize your number you better leave me a message or I will NEVER get back to you. Even if you do leave me a message, if I don't like it for any reason, it never gets returned.
I justify the extreme on my love of freedom (read my valuable time) and being too blasted well known on line now

I use N72 - bit old, but still in SmartPhone category... it think.
Use Because I can code something for my phone, if needed. And I can install some specific software on it, what I can't do on my dumbphones.

I use Samsung Galaxy S2 and BlackBerry Bold 9700. I'd like to say I am enjoying the best of both worlds because the former is touch screen and super fast while the latter has a great QWERTY keyboard. Also, I love BBM.

Here is my comment (which is also posted on your blog post):
Quote:
Don't feel bad for having a smartphone too late, just enjoy it anyway.
Moreover, I would like to say something about the statistics (survey maybe), that is a fact, I think because a typical people who used to have dumbphone will surely stick to what they are using than learning new operating system of phone which actually they don't have time to spare. The thing is a mobile phone is a communication device first and foremost right? And due to man's need the phone was evolved and modified with some useful functionalities which a computer have, then we can derive that a smartphone for portability of computer functions, since it can multi-task, access the web, play music & videos, download stuffs, make reports and many more.
Lastly, our mobile phones sometimes reflects our life style and needs. Me, I'm a fan of smartphone. Make sure that we can use the smartphone's features, otherwise we just waste money.
Thanks,
MrSS

I too was slow to adopt a smart phone but my new Android device immediately changed the way I conducted my business. I was able to add another phone line with Google Voice, check on folks in jail while on the fly and still stay on the phone with my caller, taking credit/debit cards anywhere, faxing on the go and at least another dozen things that make me more efficient, quicker to respond and just plain making life easier.

Still have my Verizon Voyager. I remember it was the first iPhones competition, they were the few phones that had touchscreens back then.

to be honest, smartphones don't really do anythign for me. I am not a casual gamer, I spend enough time seriously gaming on ps3, xbox and pc that I don't see the advantage of playing about with basic flash games and apps. I'll admit angry birds is fun but thats all.

I am using Nokia C101 and it is not a smartphone but still I love it a lot and for me the biggest advantage of using a dumbphone is that even if it fell down many a times it is still functioning the same and it also doesn't cost much to get repaired.

Hmm some interesting points mentioned above....i am using an iphone and the main reason is the fact that it allows me to do some in-house work when i'm not at home.
Sometimes i miss dumbphones and how you could just throw it on top of a table or drop it on the ground without worrying much :p

My phone makes and receives phone calls, and that's all I want it to do. I'd still be using my Motorola 7868 (probably the best CDMA phone ever made), but Verizon will no longer accept it.

Smartphone all the way, I used to have a Nokia E7 which wasn't pretty bad but after getting an Ipad 2 and then an Iphone 4, I am an Apple fan since. Helps a lot to have "the internet in your pocket" as Steve Jobs said.

I am currently using an iPhone 4, and it is the best decision I have ever made, as far as mobile devices go. I can do pretty much anything I want with it (ok well not everything, but I don't know where I'd be without it). It is really easy to use, has access to the largest amount of apps, and the Apple service is unmatchable, in my opinion. I went in there because the button wasn't working, and they straight up gave me a brand new phone right there on the spot. It's reliable, connected, looks amazing, and really really practical.
