My sister (was 4years old) stuck a pen in my floppy drive which ended up in the pc going bust ...
I spent ages on the phone trying to sort out the problem, then i was told to open the computer ... opened it and he says ...
"Can you see that IDE cable?"
"Whats an IDE cable?"
"Oh thats (description of IDE cable) can you see it yet?"
"You mean the one that looks like a pen?"
"?"
"Why did the manufacturers put a pen in my computer?"
"You mean MS notepad?"
"no no, i mean literally why is there a pen stuck in the wires?"
"HUH - you have got insurance right!???"

um, if you stick a pen in the floppy drive it is not going to go into the computer. the floppy drive has its own independent casing just like everything else does. For that matter the drive is not deep enough to hold a pen in it. The IDE cable is inside the case of the computer, not the floppy, so there is no way in the word that a pen would be stuck between the wires

exactly. a floppy drive is usually covered in metal. and the ide cable goes in the back and the pen is not going to go in the ide cable.

I never said the Pen was stuck in the IDE cables, i just asked is it near the pen
And this was a LONG LONG Time ago so i cant recall the accident exactly but i dont think the floppy had metal casing.

it would be nearly impossible to have a floppy drive without a casing, just the whole structure of a floppy requires it have casing in order to support suspended parts.

I made my PC, so I have nobody to call, but I have never ran into a problem that I have not been able to fix.

My brother used to put pennies and these little model boats, that my Uncle gave us, in the floppy drive of a computer that we used to have.

when doing phone support for anderson windows I got this call when the power was out in all 4 campus building.
ME "Helpdesk"
User "Yes, my computer is not working right"
ME "what building are you in ?"
User then told me her location
ME "The power is out in your building so the computer will not work"
User "But the phone works so then the computer should work also"
And I'm thinking wouldn't the fact that all the lights are off in the building give this person some type of clue ? So after about 5 minutes of trying to tell the user that the computer will not work when there is no power in the building .....
ME "Yes your right I will open a ticket"
User "thank you"
So 10 or 15 minutes later when the power came back on to the buildings I called the user back.
ME "Is your computer working ok now ?"
User" Yes, thank you ... and the lights are back on also"

yes, all calls to the help desk for that company require a employee ID number, and their department gets a charge

My part time job is Computer Helpdesk. It is very funny to see some of the problems we have.
For example, people call up and say their computer isn't turning on. So you go over and see them. When you get there you ask them whats wrong and they tell you again their computer wont turn on, 9 out of 10 times its because the screen is off and they haven't turned it on or because they are trying to turn the screen on and expecting the computer to fire up.
I love those types of problems because they are easy to fix.
