Wireless Networking Help

I have a Dell desktop computer with a dial-up Internet connection (provider is PeoplePC). I do not have a broadband connection/provider or cable modem but I believe the computer is cable modem compatible (computer's only about a year old).

I bought a D-Link router and adapter a couple days ago and connected them and it all seemed to be going well. The computer recognized the new hardware for the adapter, so I followed through those steps. I want to test out the connection, so I viewed the available wireless networks, found an unsecured public network within range and connected to it. I get an icon at the bottom of the screen saying the status is connectec, the signal strength is excellent, etc., etc., and all seems to be saying the computer is connected to a wireless network. When I open up the internet browser, it says there's is no page to display/cannot load the page. The Internet still works when I use my dial-up connection

Any ideas of what I can do to get the wireless to work?
