Top Utility Sites

Just wondering what utility sites you use or would recommend and what they offer.

Figure this could make an interesting thread if we listed what we thought was good and what it does.

One of the ones I recommend to is the Bootdisk site. As the name implies, it offers a range of files for booting up different systems and also advice on how to do this.

For techies, the 5 in 1 ethernet cable site is great.
Make your own ethernet cables with converters to other types.

Hijackthis!, Ad Aware, Spyware Blaster and Spybot S & D are all good tools for removing spyware.
Hijackthis! requires advanced knowledge to read logs but there are many places to have that done properly.

GREAT ANTI-MALWARE UTILITY that I would recommend is Ewido anti-malware.

This is a relatively new contender in the anti-Trojan arena. Did you know that it actually beat Norton and AVG at reliably detecting polymorphic and process injecting Trojans.

If you are running Windows 2000 or XP, I would suggest running the online version by clicking <<HERE>> and you may be suprised at what may have actually got past your current protection system.

If you want to use it for free, I would suggest visiting their site and running it about once a week for a couple of weeks so that you can get an idea of what is going on in your computer.

You do need to run it under Internet Explorer though. - Supppose they haven't thought of everything yet eh!

Yes. And for the anti-virus aspect, you can run free online scans at

McAfee, Panda Software or F-Secure.

On the AVG, I have never used it myself. I use a business product since I am in the business. But, I have heard nothing but good things about it so I recommend it to people who ask me about free antivirus alternatives.

Another vote for AVG Free. I use it on all of my computers and everyone I build a computer for or fix gets it as well.

AVG is good. Another good anti-virus software (also free) is Avast! -- I've used it for several years and it's done a great job of keeping my system safe.

I agree, AVG for sure! Love it, although it never seems to get rid of my virus' just tells me that I have them and then I have to go get rid of them myself

that's why I prefer Avast! -- it stops the viruses BEFORE they get on your machine so you don't have to get rid of anything.

Is there not a setting so that it can do this without asking or is that just the way the program is designed?

Seems strange to me

I most definitely would have to give another vote to AVG.

A-Squared isn't bad either. http://www.emsisoft.com/en/

Thread was supposed to be geared towards listing decent computer utilites (hopefully free).

I wasn't expecting everyone to start pumping off over AVG

BTW - I have to admit AVAST is pretty good -
