Yes, I spent 12 years in the IT sector working for IBM and contracted out to different corporates. Trust me, I've had to remove it a few times

This is true but in the same token, the larger companies have a bigger IT infrastructure in place and decisions aren't always bad - (just most of the time)

Yes, things have changed and it's actually pretty good.

I had a free trial of Norton, and I don't like it. It does seem to kinda bog everything down; I'm attempting to remove here shortly.
I was a diehard Panda fan for years, but the last update caused some major issues with my computer so I left. I bought McAfee for my other computers and it's been doing really good. gonna install it on here after I get Norton uninstalled -- anybody know if I'm going to run into any issues doing that, since someone said Norton was really hard to uninstall? what should I look for?

Once upon a time Norton was the best thing around and McAfee wasn't too bad either. But like previously mentioned, they have become HUGE resource hogs and I don't recommend their usage anymore for the average PC user.
Like some others here, I've been using Grisoft's AVG (Free Version) for a couple years now and I also DID finally buy it. It's been worth it.

After you've uninstalled and rebooted, look for any...
Norton entries in the Add/Remove programs applet
Norton services that are running
Norton folders on your hard drive
You will probably have Norton or Symantec folders after uninstalling because most software will leave some files behind after uninstallation. This is not a Norton specific problem. Most software companies do this.
You can also run Hijackthis and post your log in the hijackthis thread. That will tell me if Norton is still hanging around.

Technically, the "FREE" version is just for non-commercial use. MY personal thinking is that if I use it for commercial reasons (which I do), then I will pay for it IF I like it and continue to use it. I think it's great so I did pay for it.
I DO the same thing for ANY software I try out (that has the same TOS) and use for commercial purposes. Of course if you are using software (with these terms) for peorsonal use, then it's truly FREE FREE FREE!

Mcafee + Latest Windows Updates should be the most secure unless you visit hacker and porn sites and need Ani spyware etc...

When our current version of Norton expires, I'm thinking about trying TrendMicro PC-cillin (the guys that brought you CWShredder to remove CoolWebSearch). They offer a free trial and an online free virus scanner.
Whenever ther's a problem on someone's machine I've always used TrendMicro Housecall and it's found crap that Norton or McAfee didn't.
Anyone else using TrendMicro?
Free virus/spyware online scan - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
30 day free trail - http://www.trendmicro.com/download/trial/trial-pcc.asp
I'm a bit pissed with Symantec's (Norton) customer support (email only). We inquired about an issue over 10 days ago with only an auto-response 3 days later.

the best Anti-virus software is your brain...
as long as you know what your doing, what to look out for, you don't need any.
i have no AV software on my computer, every day i take back-ups of my whole hdd, i check my system proccess at least 3 times a day to see what's happning, i know what should and shouldn't be there. i am also behind a very secure firewall and have never had any problems.
i only download things i know are virus free.
no matter what AV software you use, it will 'hog' your memory in one form or another, my way i don't waist any. i know which i would choose.

I use Trend Micro and wouldn't use anything else.
I've used Norton, McAfee, AVG, Defender Pro......... Trend is the best, IMO

Not a lot of people have heard of it, but I've had great success with EZAntivirus from Computer Associates, and it's not very expensive.

you shouldn't use two.. they will intertact with each other.. which is NOT good, and could cause blue screen. also will eat your system memory, but it's your computer not mine..

Not quite true. Pretty much the only time you can get problems, is if both Antivirus programs are on "Active file monitoring" mode at the same time.
