Wanted : Ultimate notebook
I want the best damn notebook on the market. Which would that be? I don't care about price.

Please define "best". What's most important to you? What do you want it for?

Here's one quoted with 2GB RAM. If you want 4GB, it's an extra $2300!!! IMHO, not worth the extra cash for the 4GB. This one was spec'd with the second best available processor. Again, the best causes a larger jump in price than is warranted. Other than that, this is a GREAT system.
7200 RPM hard drive (important)
2GHz DUO Processor (Like 2 CPUs)
2GB RAM (important)
512 RAM for video - separate
100 GB Hard drive
DVD Burner
17" LCD screen
Wireless A/G
Bluetooth
Comes with WinXP PRO only. No MS Office, but it can be added for a couple hundred bucks.

Sony Vaio are often considered top of the range and in my opinion have the best screens by far.

I hate Sony, too. So far I like NEC the best, but I don't know if NEC notebooks are even available to the US....

I know someone who bought one of those notebooks that you can submerge in water, drop from 20 feet, etc. And its a tablet PC. I wish I could remember the name, its really cool. It was something like $7000... eek!

check out those new alienware notebooks. They are great because you can actually upgrade things like the video/sound cards. So if you buy it, have it for a year and some great new card comes out you can actually upgrade it so you are not sitting here like me stuck on my 64mb video card forever until I buy a new one.
They are the most high end laptops you can get. I think some of them can go on the heavy side sometimes though. If you are looking for a powerful laptop that is light check out those new Apple Intel duo's, they are great too, they are more powerful than the centrino duos

Do you need it to be rugged and waterproof for some unplanned drifting over to Japan? ;-)

panasonic toughbook. they are nice, but weigh about 10lbs. I had a friend that worked for sbc and got assigned one of those and took it over to show it to me and i threw my glass of water on it. He almost freaked out, then I told him they were water resistant. They are expensive though.

I would go with the best IBM notebook on the market.
Though you can get a high end Dell laptop (E1705) for about $1000
