I was looking for some alternative too, but give up since Gmail is the best I found.

Google is giving its email service for free because it can display ads. In fact any other free email providers do the same.

How does this response help the thread creator out?

Their new Google+ bull is far too Orwellian for my taste. Even though I am aware this is a losing battle, because most people don't care about their privacy, I want to move away from Google. Problem is I am a Gmail user, and even though I have my own websites where I could set up my own email addresses, it would be impractical to go back to reading mail using Vista's e-mail client because I need to be able to access my email from anywhere. Can anyone recommend a webmail app that I could use? I looked at round cube some time ago, and then there was Atmail. Cpanel's solutions (horde and squirrel mail) are seriously behind the times (no Ajax and all the modern goodies, plus you have to login into cpanel first).

I use hotmail and have had the same email address for years now. Haven't even tried gmail before but I can tell you hotmail is pretty good... it does everything I need.

Thunderbird

Download a copy of Thunderbird and enjoy all the email solutions without the adds. I use Thunderbird for POP and Gmail accounts

ah! Gmail is the best Email conductor i ever use. There are so many alternatives like Thunderbird, MS-Outlook and many more, but their is no comparison for Gmail. That's what i think.

You can try gmx.com or mail.com both owned by the same company. inbox.com use to be ok until they started forcing people to install their adware to get an account. You also have hotmail and yahoo mail, as well as aol mail. If you wanna use your own mail, can get a domain and web hosting like hostgator, they have various mail clients like squirrelmail etc...built in. I personally use thunderbird to handle all my email accounts at different places, is much easier.
