Looking for alternative to Gmail
I want to give up Gmail. I am sick and tired of their ad profiling. It's creepy to see how their ads follow me everywhere I go (yes I am interested in forex, web hosting, domain names and web hosting, but that's really none of your business). Their new Google+ bull is far too Orwellian for my taste. Even though I am aware this is a losing battle, because most people don't care about their privacy, I want to move away from Google. Problem is I am a Gmail user, and even though I have my own websites where I could set up my own email addresses, it would be impractical to go back to reading mail using Vista's e-mail client because I need to be able to access my email from anywhere. Can anyone recommend a webmail app that I could use? I looked at round cube some time ago, and then there was Atmail. Cpanel's solutions (horde and squirrel mail) are seriously behind the times (no Ajax and all the modern goodies, plus you have to login into cpanel first).

To be honest I don't take much notice of the ads, in fact I hardly even notice they are there. I think from a marketing point of view, for anyone who is involved with email or internet marketing in anyway, it would be in their best interests to embrace Google+ as it is a fair chance it will be a very powerful marketing tool in the months ahead.

I am serious. You know what I saw when I logged on to this forum? An ad from namesilo. Their banners are either orange with yellow text or blue with white text. I've seen that Adsense ad on every website I visit. Other ads which I have also seen everywhere are for Interbank FX (a forex broker) and for the New York Film Academy. I clear my cookies and cache on browser close, how do they know it's me? All I can think of they track my IP and compare it against a database in real time. With the money they have (and the one that they're making (see this: http://articles.businessinsider.com/2010-03-22/tech/30086368_1_portfolio-construction-foreign-government-bonds-trading]) they could probably trakc millions of people in real time.
So yes I stand by my statement that the modern world is getting creepier by the minute.

Looks nice, but that doesn't answer my question. Is there a webmail app that I can install on my own webserver?

This blog post may or may not help you out but it was useful to me.

I'm not sure about the email thing that you are after. http://squirrelmail.org/
All free email service providers like gmail, yahoo...etc will have ad's up since they need to earn money from that email service somehow.

I doubt you will get away from advertising entirely; any site offering an email service will try to generate revenue somehow--and that is usually by advertising.
If you are just trying to avoid Google knowing too much about you, there are thousands of other email services you could use.
If you seriously want to install a webmail service on your own server, based on your own domain, there are products for that too (but they cost money). You may want to check out what Alt-N Technologies has to offer. I am sure other, similar, products are available, but so far haven't come across one that is free.
You may want to browse the forums at EMailDiscussions.com:

The whole purpose of these forums is to discuss email topics.

Well if you dont want to use Gamil than its your personal decision but i personally prefer Gmail over any other email service because Gmail is more reliable and user friendly. But if you want to switch to other E-mail service than you can use Hotmail as your primary e-mail but dont go with Yahoo as their advertisement is more awful than Gmail.

I guess there's nothing more reliable and secure than Gmail especially on their SPAM Filtering capabilities. What else do we have out there? Hotmail? Live? Yahoo? MSN? They're not that good after all..

I wouldn't worry about the ads. It's not like there's a person monitoring your activity and watching your every move. Gmail is the best, so it might be something you will have to learn to live with.

I prefer to use Gmail. Its best and secure. You need not to be worry about the ads as they are for the purpose of advertising and they do not bother much.If you will continue using Google,it will be beneficial for you in future. It will become a strong marketing tool in future. But if you don't want to use gmail ,then you can use hotmail.

I've noticed this about g mail and Google also, they're really good but they always seem to know what you're about to type in! it's like the friendly polite computer from the futuristic movie that decides to murder you in you're sleep to protect you from yourself
Inbox.com's a good alternative

gmail is the best free email provider other then yahoo mail and hotmail. There are several email providers where you can signup for example rediffmail and mail.in.com

In theory you could just download all your email from their site through a POP3 client like Thunderbird. Then you can close your account there. Next, just sign up to a new provider (any would do, actually), and just order the software to use POP3 and without "keeping messages on the server" to keep your email closer to 100% yours.

I don't mind Yahoo. I've got an account with them for my personal emails and I like their webmail setup.

I think you could try In Out email script (which you can host on your own servers and run the service), here you go: http://www.inoutscripts.com/products/inout_webmail/

I would suggest stay with Gmail and get rid of the Ads. Set-up your Gmail in your Outlook!
You can control and manage all your emailing through Outlook no need to login to Gmail.com.
Google provides the best service in the industry, you can't get away from it!

Try Mozilla Thunderbird - it's a great alternative.
