I'm Concerned About Security
Hey there! I have a little problem with my computer. I think a website installed a virus into my computer, automatically.
The virus disabled my antivirus, my firewall, etc. and would close all my applications as soon as I opened them. It would also pose as a fake antivirus and tell me to delete files, etc. I rebooted the computer and it started doing it again. So, I opened up msconfig, and went into Startup, and disabled it. It's called "Windows Defender", with the command as:
%Program Files%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide
I don't have any problems with my PC with that thing disabled, but I'm still worried I haven't gotten rid of the virus. My antivirus and spyware scans came up with nothing. I have HijackThis, but I don't know what to look for when using that program. Should I be concerned?

Did you scan the computer with HouseCall - Free Online Virus Scan by TrendMicro?
It might take a while, depending on how big your drive is and how much stuff you have on the drive.

Well if nothing else works then it is always better to take your backups, format your harddrive, install antivirus, scan your system and then install the backups.

Yeah.. Do a fresh and clean install. Update your OS. Install an AV and update it then scan all your files..

Mhh... Well finding all virus data could prove very hard because Windows Defender per se is no virus, but there are some viruses that like to disguise themselves as windows software.
As stated above, a fresh install would be the wisest thing to do. Also set new passwords etc. just in case.

A reinstall might not help at all, depending on where the virus is installed. If its in the boot sector, its going to be really hard for you to get rid of it, which could end up in ou having to buy a new hard drive. I would recommend doing what HTMLBasicTutor says though, get your PC scanned online, and see what it brings up.
Doing a little reading online, it seems that they have two names for this virus, they either call it a rogue (from microsoft), or a smart engine virus. Good luck though, you may have a long road ahead of you. Run the online scan, and see what the results are. If trend micro can remove it, then be happy. there are boot sector viruses out there that can "nuke" a hard drive to the point that it becomes unusable.

I have a suggestion for you. I have faced the similar problem and at that time one of my mates told me to install avast antivirus and schedule it to boot scan (that means we are setting it to scan our computer before windows start), i just compared the regular scan and boot scan, when regular scan didn't find any viruses but in the boot scan it found lot many viruses (and corrupted files), it will just prompt us to give an instruction either to delete the file or leave it, we can set it to "Yes to All" so it will be deleting all viruses and quarantine the infected files. Try it.
Hope, this will be help for you!

Have you tried to change your anti virus? You can use AVG where it can prompt you warning when accessing to malicious websites that can harm your computer.
