Permissions to save no longer?

I have been using an external hard drive for a while now to keep my files. I have been using Windows 7 for about a year or more now too. I have had no problems til now with saving files there and now I get a message saying
You dont have permission to save to this location. Would you like to save it "elsewhere"?

I tried saving an xls file and a word doc and neither would allow me to? It says to contact administrator. One suggestion was to run IE as administrator, but, the word doc was in my documents, so, that couldnt be the problem? What permission do I need to change to get it to work?

I have narrowed it down to the external hard drive itself. I grabbed the files from there that i needed to work on and saved them to a thumb drive and am able to edit them... how do I get the permissions back on the External?

Are you the administrator for your PC?

When i got this message at work trying to save files to my external floppy drive, turns out it was a bad external Floppy drive. (I just replace it and everything saved)

Some things I have to right click on to run as administrator. How do I know if I am? I think it is only the hard drive though. All of the files are as read only on there now, but if I move them to my thumb drive, I can change and save them there.

Try 1. If that doesn't work. Try 2.

1)

Log into your PC

Go to Start>control panel>user accounts>Your Account.

Make sure your account is an Administration Account.

2) Make sure your external drive has windows 7 driver. Try reinstalling driver, or rolling back driver.

Thanks, 1 I confirmed, I am administrator.
2. Not sure about how to do that, will do a search to see.
Thank you very much for your help. I learned something.
