The Surprising Reason Your Phone’s Battery Life Drains
This explains a lot for me. Have to carry my charger everywhere I go. lol
Might need to remove some App's that I just don't use anymore.

Sick of watching your battery icon seemingly go as fast as a stoplight from green to yellow to red? It could well be all the apps you have installed — even the ones you aren’t using.
A team of researchers at Purdue University released a study to TechNewsDaily that thoroughly examines what dozens of popular apps are doing on Android phones, and what many of them are doing wrong. (Though the study was only on Google’s Android operating system, the researchers say that they can do the same for Apple’s iOS and Microsoft’s Windows phone operating systems.)
Apps turn on parts of the phone, such as the processor, the GPS or the camera, when they need them, which is normal. But by digging into the code of apps, the researchers often found what....

Any thoughts?
I'm actually going to get a newer Iphone at the end of this month and really should do a massive App's cleanup anyways.

I had a problem on my iPhone 4 at one point where, I was listening to music and the phone just switched off for no reason.I had to reboot holding in the menu button and the power button on the top of the phone. Eventually it booted and I searched the net to see what I could find because I thought the phone was broken.
Turns out I had too many apps running at the same time, and all I had to do was remove some of the apps. To do that, you press the menu button twice while in the home screen, and it shows you a list of apps running at the time. You can then press and hold until the apps start to wiggle and tap the minus button to remove them. Then you restart the phone and it should be ok. Battery life improved after that as well, because there was less running on the phone.

The topic tells about the (downloaded) applications running in background that uses internet connection. Another culprit is the signal that your phone is using. Example, you have a 3G signal enable phone, remember that 3G signal is good for internet browsing, data call and other activity requiring data transfer. As you are using that said signal, your phone's battery charged is running out fast. Thus, switching off the UMTS/ 3G signal and using GSM signal is advisable. Don't forget that the brightness of screen also affecting the battery charge. I always set the brightness of the screen to lowest, and I'd downloaded an apps that will control the light of a phone, including screen light, keypad light, flash (LED) and other phone parts emitting light. Wi-fi and bluetooth belongs to battery charge sucker as well.

I tell people all the time to delete photos, unused apps, old music that they never listen to, old emails/texts etc. They wonder why their smart phones are playing up and running slow... they are basically mini computers and they get backed up and slowed down by trying to do too much... kind of like the typical windows machine that takes 10 mins to load up after a restart because of all the programs running.
Common sense people, keep it clean.

I also keep wi-fi and bluetooth turned off unless they are not in use as they are also a big reason to battery consumption.

The installed apps can be a pain in the as*. After I hard reset my phone, the time between two recharges doubled. Now I am really careful when installing new software. I also try to minimize the number of background processes running. This really helps.

I have a LG from Verizon and purchased the extended battery. you place it inside and it has a larger back cover. I can get around 18-24 hours, but I'm not a big app user. What I hate is not being able to delete some of the apps that came installed with the phone. One thing I learned is if you are not using your phone you can change it to Airplane Mode. That way it doesn't automatically send out signals. No one has ever called me when I had the phone in that mode, so I can't say if you can or cannot receive calls.

I'm not sure what LG phone you have Virginia, however if you want to delete the generic bloat-wear that your provider has installed - providing that it's an Android phone, you should be able to root it and install a custom ROM, this is the first thing I did to my Android phone, as the OS provided is much like a generic Windows install from HP, full of things which nobody uses.

I agree with this but that's if you don't actually use your phone at all other then to tell what time it is.
I have the Iphone 4s and had a full battery when I left for the car show today at 9:30 a.m. by 6:30pm when I left, I had about 45% left on my battery.
I had to use my phone to call the clients up to say that there picture was done and ready for pickup plus to communicate with my cousin who I was working for today at the carshow.
If I made a few personal phone calls for longer then 5 minutes, My phone would of been dead way before 6:30pm today.
I know that I have way to many apps on my phone but it's hard to part ways with them. Some of the Apps must be battery hogs for sure.

Snake,
To save on battery life on the iPhone I do this:
1. Turn off 3G
2. Turn off Bluetooth
3. Turn off notifications. The apps can try to access all they want but with this off the door is closed. They cannot update themselves every minute n drain ur battery
4. Turn off wifi and turn it on when u need it.
5. I lower my screen brightness to 50%

I could have swore there was an app to track which apps were memory hogs. There is an app that manages ur battery life, my friend has it and he loves it.

That's why I have a custom ROM running on my phone with all the bloatware removed and a small selection of apps I use installed.
No need for extra crap on there.

How many apps you installed and how many you have running ALL the time or MOST of the time is a completely different ordeal.
How many you have installed is just a matter of storage and space. It has nothing to do with battery life.
There are Task Manager Apps that kill Apps that are not being used in the background. Even if you think you closed them or if you never even opened them up. They still can be running in the background. That is what kills your battery life.
I hope that helps.

Interesting article. My smartphones battery drains pretty quick and I have to constantly charge it.

About 90% of what affect laptop battery to make it drain fast is what affect phone battery. Therefore, if you know how to maintain laptop battery, you can apply the strategies to your phone battery also. e.g
1. Do not overcharge always
2. Do not open too much app at the same time
3. Reduce the hour of time you listen to music or watch movies with your phone

I think all smartphones drain really fast because of the huge color screens, I find reducing the brightness, even a little really helps. I have a USB charger at work so it never goes down, but still end up charging it each evening. If I am working away and have forgotten a charger, putting the phone on airplane mode when I go to sleep means that the phone uses 1% (sometimes 0%), so it is the WiFi/3g etc... along with screen use that kills it for me. Im not sure that background apps are having much effect when the phone is not in use.

Thanks, Dan, but I think I need to have a little more info. What is "root it"? What is a "custom ROM"? Where do I get it? How do I install it?
Thanks to all of you for the other ideas. I can go almost 2 days if I used all of your hints, and my LG Revolution is my only phone.
