Can Cisco Re-Invent the Router?

Do you think they can do it? Hold that though while you read the blog post below.

Quote:
The home router — the one that connects all your devices to the same Wi-Fi network — is evolving. As people consume more and more bandwidth-heavy content such as video, standards are changing to keep up. Cisco is going a step further by introducing a system where your devices aren’t just connected by a faster connection, but also accessible from anywhere.

Cisco’s new system is called Cisco Connect Cloud (CCC), and you get it when you buy one of the company’s Linksys Smart Wi-Fi routers. With CCC, your router becomes more than just a junction of data pipes — instead, you’re given a gateway that bestows your devices with special networking features and extra interoperability.

How does it do that? With apps, of course. As of today, there are six Cisco Connect apps you can get from either the iOS App Store or Google Play that let you do things like access the feed from a home webcam on your phone, “beam” media between devices or change parental controls for specific devices.

I like it. By introducing the use of apps on mobile devices, Cisco is just beginning to open the door of potential uses. I'll be taking a look the next time in the tech aisle.

Thank the Lord i don't have to play around with those annoying Linksys routers with all the technical bla bla that only their techy guy know anything about......

My internet and cable provider supplies a wireless router free of charge and they set it up for free too.... no hassle! Much easier than playing around with my Linksys

It has a great potential and hopefully they'll be able to pull it off, I'm looking forward on this innovation because I myself use alot of bandwidth and an improvement is really helpful.

Will the cloud feature be optional—can it be turned on and off?

I am curious if this will become a subscription fee for using their cloud service.
