Best sample rate for mp3 rips

Just bought a new TV which has an mp3 usb player. I have always ripped my CDs to wma. What do you suggest as the best compromise between quality and file size when ripping CDs as mp3?

Any gpl or low cost software that does a significantly better job than media player?

I personally use DBpowerAmp CD Ripper & Music converter. It's a great tool for doing really almost anything with audio files. I also prefer 192bit conversion for natural instrument music and I can raise to 320bit conversion for more complex electronic music. I also found that variable bit rate can get you into trouble with various media players. So if you want to be sure about the compatibility choose constant bit rate.

I've never had a problem with filesizes, with large files since I've always had ample storage and I'd like high quality MP3s so I always go for 320kbps which is what I usually go with.

Comparison of Bitrates

It's an old article, but the only real consideration you have is quality vs file-size, if you have a big enough HDD you have no real concerns I would just bump it up to max. There's probably more to it, but I don't really rip anything these days.

Personally I use either 128 or if space is not a concern then 192 or 256. 192 is more than enough for any type of portable device or your TV as you are not really gonna hear a difference. If your playing them on a highend stereo or something capable of higher levels of audio then 256+ might be for you but even then its questionable.

I disagree, 128 cracks up on my TV and on my speakers. Anything below 256 after a certain volume begins to crack up.

With storage being so cheap these days I always go for 320. It's a lot nicer.

I just wanna know that which is better and why, 128 kbps or 320 kbps? I've often seen that this data rate varies whole time, so is it really matters a lot? I have mp3 on my iPod touch of both type but never found much difference in it. I would like to ask for some experts' opinion because I think there are many other people too who are seeking for the same answer.

Lame codec with GUI - Razor Lame and EAC (Exact Audio Copy), best sample rate is 320kbps.

Keep them as a .MP3 and at 328 KB/s, they 'should' sound much better

128 - 192 are the poor rates used for just compressed Mp3's. You're more likely to download these types of bitrates from the Apple store or on basic free mp3 sites... The quality when you burn them are garbage.

Downloading an actual 320kpbs rate now that's money because that's an actual CD rip. So downloading and burning that to a CD or vise versa will get you the best possible mp3 rate.
