DSL or Cable

Which do you prefer and why?

Cable or DSL?

Interested in hearing everyone's two cents.

I have only used cable (not counting the dial up days). I stick to it because people I talk to have problems with DSL.

I've been on fiber optic for quite a long time now. Before that it was DSL.

I am not a defender of either. Bear in mind that in some instances DSL is faster and more reliable. If you live in Southern California, you may have Charter Communications whose cable drops in and out too often....along with blackouts. A DSL line sees no such troubles albeit it's slower.

If you live close to the phone company than that DSL isnt that bad. The farther away, the slower the speed generally.

So, yes fiber optic cable is better on paper but it doesnt necessarily mean it's a better "car".

Of course you are absolutely correct. But it is the wire miles from the DSLAM or DMARK and not the street miles that determine success or failure. In many urban areas they wired the grid open horse shoe fashion. You might be 1/2 block from the hub but at the open end of the horse shoe and 2+ wire miles from the hub.

Well i personally prefer DSL as i'm using it. As compare with cable connection, DSL is now available in WIMAX technology that why it is now becomes fusible to carry any where and the speed is same as cable connection.

I have 10mbps down and get very close to that most of the time. Sometimes after dark when others on the loop start streaming it drops a bit.

You can check yours at speedtest.net/

My DSL has been terrible in the UK for years. I would have preferred a google cable connection if it was available where I am.

I think the OP forgot the fiber optic, honestly when it will be available from our internet provider I will get this.

Actually I've got cable from the street to the house, all the city main network is fiber optic. If you want to know more about that clikc here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber-optic_communication

I'm hoping to upgrade from my slow dsl connection to Fiber Optic as soon as I can afford too.

Fiber optics are available here. So can't wait to get it installed. Hopefully next summer I can afford to have it installed.

I'm saving up for it.

There's no cable here.

Fiber optic cables as of now is the best, giving a lot of bandwidth...

But Im still sticking with DSL cause it is cheap and stable... although I'm tempted with the internet speed that fiber optics can give.

Hope fiber optic connections will be available for my country.

I have DSL and i hear that it is more stable than cable. i have heard that cable can be faster, but is shared and
can be slow for some if it is busy and not maintained properly. hence you get various responses from people using different companies.
