Scanning to PDF and file size

I don't have any questions. I learned this the hard way and I may be the last person here to learn it but I thought I would share it anyway.

My wife needed to submit some expense account receipts and was on the road so I said I would scan them and email them to her. I scanned these stupid things at 300 DPI letter size paper and printed to a PDF. Six pages at close to 5 MB per page, 25.6 MB total.

The email server said no. We aren't going to do that.

So this morning I started playing with the DPI settings. 200 DPI gave a good clear copy but the file size was about 250 KB per page so I tried again at 100 DPI. The resulting file size was about 86 KB per page and the print quality was way better than fax quality.

To shorten what seems like a long post, 6- 8.5x 11 pages @ 100 DPI of text fit into one 6 page PDF file and the entire file size was only 508 KB.

Using a mono laser printer to print the pages I can see some minor quality differences between the 300 and the 200 but I can't see any between the 200 and the 100.

Bottom line: Scan your text docs to 100 DPI and you will have the best compromise between file size and print quality

I must admit ScriptMan, it's been so long that I have owned a scanner that I merely take photos of things, save it as a JPEG and e-mail it. One of the benefits of having a smartphone.

Was it a business network that the e-mail server refused to send it from, as I have sent 90MB files before via Google Mail.

Norton said whoa and then when I broke the large ones down to multiple emails the wife's business server still stripped them out.

Different topic but still about scanning:
I went ahead and experimented with some 4x6 printed 35mm photos while I was at it. I am going to pick up the picks here in a few minutes. I have albums full of old images that the rest of the family wants copies of and finding the negs would be a PITA. I don't think they even offer B&W service anywhere within a 1000 miles of here.
