Choose the laptop that has a processor of 2.6GHz or higher, atleast 4GB of RAM, Atleast 1GB of VIDEO CARD and 500HDD..I preffered to choose intel processor than AMD.
AMD processor is getting hotter easily..I only share what I read in the articles.

I would personally go with this:
http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Windows...8648110&sr=1-1

It is $499.99 and it will fit your budget.
Specs:
CPU: Core i5 3230M 2.6 GHz
More than enough for programming, videos, music, and daily browsing.

RAM: 6 GB DDR3
Easily help with multitasking and is more than enough for your use.

Storage:
500 GB

5 hour battery Life.
Windows 7
DVD player.

a good Dell laptop would be your best choice for business, educational, and personal use. Most Dell laptops today are on sale between $229 and $350 on clearance. Most of them come with 500 GB of memory, four gigs of RAM, but no CD player. If you're able to get a laptop without a CD player but have a touchscreen, go for the gusto.

Since you are about to use it for programming, you definitely need a reliable laptop...based on my experience, i suggest you get DELL (business series - latitude) or Lenovo (thinkpad)...it doesn't matter whether it is brand new or refurbished...

You go for Product comparison websites and then also for Price Comparisons , you may be getting similar Laptops but some of them be fairly cheap , and can save you a lot of money.
Do not really be fast in buying, cause their are some amazing online and offline deals that go on, Be sure to cash on that.
