making pdf files...

I know I can use photoshop and I know I can use programs like cute pdf to print from any program to a pdf file...

but I'm wondering if anyone knows any tricks for creating high quality pdf files without having adobe acrobat.

I don't have the money to put into a program I will use once every 6 months... anyone know of an open source copycat program out there... or any other high end solution?

If you ever need something converted to PDF just let me know. I will be happy to do it for you. Adobe Acrobat Elements came automatically on my PC. It isn't the big program, but it is great for converting stuff to PDFs.

@Cricket: thanks... but I need to get something I can personally work with.
I'm too anal at times, that's why I'm wanting more then what I can do with mocking it up in photoshop.

I'm working on some school admission forms and would like to have them available to be filled in online and then printed... instead of just providing a flat file.

I found one open source pdf program, but I'm not to sure about it.

PrimoPDF has worked really well for me. Four different quality settings and you don't need acrobat.

I'm not sure how it compares to Cute, though.

EDIT: Nm, it just produces flat files.

I may just end up producing flat files afterall.

to use the opensource version I found, I will have to install python...
and I just don't want to go through the trouble.

Adobe has an online solution for making PDFs and at one time, you could make 5 for free before paying for the service. Let me see if I can find a link....

also, if you don't mind an older version of Acrobat, I have a 4.0 that I bought for next to nothing on ebay. Used once, now I have the latest version that came with PS. If you want it, I'll mail it to you. Has all the codes, etc. It's just sitting here....PM me if you want it.

I use the online pdf creator from Adobe. After the 5 trial, it is only 10.81 with tax per month. You can cancel anytime.

Thats what I did when i was in college. That is how I bought all my web design software, I specifically bought it at that store too! My suggestion is take cimms offer, it was very nice of her to do so.

I have Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0. It does pdf's very nicely.

Cost a few hundred though.

Adding my voice to "OpenOffice" choir. Opens all MS proprietary formats, and lets you save into PDF with a couple of clicks. Very, very nice. MS Office is so 1990ies.
