What the hell is an Appendable Data Disc? I inserted a CD-R and it gives me an error message.

Weird term.
They probably mean multisession CD. Most CDs can be made into multisession ones. It all depends of the software you use. A little warning: sometimes reading data from mulisession CDs is not possible (for instance for music CDs) until the CD is closed.

That's my problem.

When you insert the restore CD into your computer under Windows, you see a message indicating the CD isn't the right one for your computer. Or, when you try to restore your computer back to the factory state using the restore CD, you see a "Wrong Machine" message.

"Restore CD" refers to the Restore CDs, Recovery CDs, Reconfiguration CDs, Configuration Builder CDs (CBCDs), or PIRAD CD/DVDs that came with your Toshiba PC.

So I try to create the CD they want me to create and it won't burn.

well to append something... is to add something to it later. And a cd-rw is an appendable disk. It literally means you can add more data to it later. You stated what you are trying to do, but what is the error during the DMI utility? Is it asking for an appendable disk?

I dunno why the CD-R would be rejected byt the system. If it's blank and never used before it should just work.

From what I understand you are trying to make a copy of your drive for disaster recovery. While I have no real help to offer with the specific errors you are getting, I gotta say I happilly use Acronis True Image to create perfect copies of hard disks. I did a few dozen systems so far and never a single glitch.
