CD Question

Hi,

I burned a CD-R of some pictures and videos from the hard drive that were downloaded from our digital camera. I wanted to free up space on the computer and also save the images.

But, when I put the CD in the CD/DVD player, it gives a msg, no disc. Is that because I needed to put the stuff on a CD-RW ?? This stuff is confusing to me, I can view the stuff on the computer with the disc in, but not the dvd cd player, I was hoping to view them on the tv also.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

If I was in your position I'd start by doing 3 things:

1. Place a blank CD-R into the computer drive and see if you get the same message. If so, there's probably something wrong with the drive.
2. Place a different CD-R (that contains something) into the computer drive and see if you can look at the contents. If you can, there's probably something wrong with the first CD-R.
3. Place the CD-R that contains your pictures into the drive of another computer to check if you can see the contents. If not, that particular CD-R is the problem.

You want to try to deduce if the problem is your computer drive or the CD-R itself.

Good luck.

**NOTE**: When I say "computer drive" I am referring to the CD/DVD player that is giving you the problems.

It may just be that you forgot to "finalize" the CD.

Some players require that the disc be finalized before playing it.

OOps sorry the CD/DVD player is part of our entertainment center system, not the computer. The CD/DVD player on the computer is working alright with the CD's.

Geez, now I don't know what to do, after each step the burner program gives you steps to take and buttons to click, and one is finished. I did that, 2 different cd's to see if I goofed up the first one, but the second one won't work either.

If the CDs haven't been finalized yet, you can just pop them back in and do that.
It's no biggie that you've already taken them out.

Finalizing the disc just "closes" it officially so that no more data can be written to it.
Computer optical drives don't usually care if a disc is finalized. They'll read it.
But, set top boxes like cd players and dvd players often require that the disc is finalized before reading it.

But I appreciate you're advice, Now I'll know if I have a problem with the cd/dvd player on the computer.

This perspective comes from years of tech support...so please don't be offended by it. It frequently pays to make sure we understand each other and no invalid assumptions are made.

With all that said...you burned a CD of movies. I suspect your CD/DVD player may only play it as a movie if it is burned on a DVD disc as a DVD movie. What format were the movie files that you burned? If that is not the case then Zap's answer is the most likely solutions. Let us know how this works out.

Oh no not technical stuff, okay the pictures were jpg's and the movies were short like 30 second shots of the kids at the mall at xmas and are label quicktime movies and one is 282 kb's and it says when I hover over the file with the mouse, open with real player. It has a button to change it, but will that matter ??

Okay, so now I'm confused. I hope this cleared up something in my explaination and of course NOT OFFENDED AT ALL !! Appreciative is more like it.

I think the simplest thing would be post what make and model your entertainment center player is. I think that will clear up the problem a lot. I still think the problem is that the DVD movies you put in your entertainment center player have a very special format. The player doesn't know anything about computer movie and picture formats like jpeg and quicktime. Make and model for you player will allow me to do some really quick research.

LOL, you don't know me too well, the terms jpeg, quicktime, format are technical to me. Would it make a difference, if I removed the movies from that folder and just put the pictures on the disk, I'm thinking probably not.

Anywho, its a Sony DVD/CD/Video CD player. Sony Video DVP-NS300, that's what I see on it, my husband knows more about it, I just push play!

He set it up, hooking up wires etc. We bought it maybe 5 years ago or so.

Probably not the answer you want to hear but it might save you some discs.
I don't think the Sony DVP-NS300 supports CD-R playback.

Thanks for the link, their review was true, the picture and sound are great. Question though, it says it might play some CD-RW disks, how can I find out which "might" work ?? On that part of the review I kind of didn't understand exactly what they were trying to explain on that. Or am I totally reading it wrong, and they mean a slightly different model ?

maybe your player does not recognise the formats in your cd

Linda, basically when that review says in might play some CD-RW, it means it is not a supported feature but it may accidentally work if the CD-RW drive on your computer or whatever computer made the disc does things just right for the Sony NS300. Bottom line is it is not MENT to work but it does anyway if condition are just right. Don't count on it working. Sorry.
