The processor better be 2 gig, or above!!!
As long as you have the right resources it's ok, but don't throw out your xp system Vista has some serious compatability issues. I can't get Yahoo messenger to work, adaware doesn't work (though I haven't tried in a few months) Adobe writer doesn't work. Photoshop needs to run by itself, or not many other windows, or it will lock up. What else, uh Mozzilla runs like total crap pages don't load it's a nightmare. I would wait to upgrade till they fix some of these compatability issues. Vista is not very backward compatable (I find that rather funny since it is a main requirement of any software vendor) I have Acrobat 5 old as dirt, but it runs on XP just fine.

Being an ex-IT bod, I know better than to use vista for at least another 8 to 12 month's. Let them get the creases out of it first

Perfect time for me to answer this,
I installed Vista..Dual boot with XP..
I was like amazed for a month...After that it started showing its true colors...Can't handle many programs at a time...Hangs every 15 minutes...
Sucks for 1 GB RAM and a 256 MB Graphic Card.
I just formatted Vista and saw that it used some files from XP which made me format XP again too...It basically is good for HIGH config PCs...And this high is absoultely high...2GB RAM

XP for now, but this isn't that different from the Win 98 - XP switch. Hated XP in the beginning because it had so many problems running Windows 98 programs. Then after a year or so, I tried it again, and I managed to enjoy it this time. Granted, the whole Direct X9 / 10 thing its annoying as hell this time. In one year tops I'll probably be running Vista and enjoying it.
Right now I'm waiting for the Service Pack 1 to be released to try Vista again.

Is it just the familiarity of it, or is it actually usability?
John loved vista when he got it.
Enlighten us.

I am stuck with Vista on my new latop and I see no great difference or excitement for the upgrade. I would have stuck with XP if it hadnt been already installed on it.

Vista on a modern dual core machine with 2GB+ of RAM. Anything less than that, and give me Windows XP.
Man, if I wasn't developing crap using Visual Studio 2005 I'd be using Ubuntu instead. I just can't stop using an expensive program and throw out my existing code though. Blah.

A PC is a tool, Vista at the moment introduces a level of risk in using that tool that XP does not -- will all my software run etc.???
So it has to be XP for me.

XP for me here too. I find myself using it more and more lately. I was a Ubuntu (Linux) guy for a while but none of my simple games run under it. Now now Dual boot but rarely boot into Linux.
My next computer will probably have Vista on it, unless I go Mac which is to expensive IMHO anyhow. Depending on how much Vista DRM crap pisses me off I'll probably wind up formating and install Ubuntu anyhow.
