laptop, new vs used?
I'm looking to complete my ideal work setup, which means I'm looking to buy a laptop. I originally wanted a macbook, but I've since decided that I want to have a linux machine.
This machine is literally going to be for browsing the internet, and editting text files. That is ALL. Which means I don't need to go to best buy and get the latest and greatest in laptop technology. That said, I don't want a ****ty used one either.
Half of me wants to just get a new one, cause I like new stuff. But if I'm gonna waste 200 or 300 dollars extra just to get something brand new... well I'd rather not do that.
On the other hand, I don't know what's a reasonable price for a used one. And If i'm gonna get a used one for 400 or 500 bucks which may have underlying issues, I might as well just pay the 600 for something I'm sure that works.
My question is, if you guys were looking to buy a laptop primarily for work stuff (no games, no graphics software, etc...) what would you do?

Get an acer for tigerdirect for cheap. New, but also not crappy. Not cutting edge, but not old fashioned. Even getting last year's model will save you $500 or so. Besides, you won't be forced into buying an OS you don't want.

Aint that the truth. I figure the price of these things new is taking into account windows vista, which is unfortunate.
never heard of tigerdirect before. i'll look into that, thanks =)

www.tigerdirect.com for you Americans. Sign up for their email newsletter - you'll get one every couple of days, often with a decent laptop for $350. You can always unsubscribe after you buy. A lot of overstock or end of the month specials.
Good luck!

TigerDirect has greta deals. Refurbished arent always that bad, but warranty is limited. Spend as much money as you can on memory. Being able to upgrade that will help a lot down the road if you work a lot with graphics.
