Reuse your additional hard disk drives

Unused hard disk drives that are taking up space in your cupboard can be recycled and used as back up or storage devices.

Quote:
With the dropping prices of electronic products, it is likely that any person will have at least two hard disk drives in possession, with at least one of them being redundant. If you were to be using desktop, the additional hard disk drives can be used as secondary drives. Unfortunately, this is not the case for laptops.
Sometime you do not need to buy expensive external hard disk drives (or USB enclosures); for instance, this simple tutorial helps to re-used your additional hard disk drives.

It works literally in any operating systems; I have tested in both Windows and Linux.

A HD enclosure probably cost somewhere between $50 to $80; you're paying for the casing and the brand (name). Furthermore, HD enclosure only allows you to connect to a single IDE type of drive, i.e. 2.5" only or 3.25" only and not both.

Hmm... You can get a new 2.5" enclosure on eBay for about $12.

You certainly can get that for $12, but no guarantee it's going to give you quality service.

I have experience in buying cheap 2.5" enclosure from eBay before and it does not work well with USB 2.0 transfer speed. Of course, I cannot just be stereotype and insist that all cheap enclosures are not worthwhile buying. But that's just my experience.

It's a matter of luck sometimes. I bought 2 enclosures off eBay (at different times from different sellers). One was was absolute pants, kept giving me buffer errors whenever I tried copying anything larger an 100M to it at a time. I just ended up throwing it away.

The other is great. Works perfectly, never had any problems!

I totally agree with you. It's just based on luck, whether you want to risk it to buy a faulty one each time your enclosure doesn't work

Anyway, I was rather happy with the IDE adapter so, I disposed that enclosure of mine. It's totally redundant.

HD enclosure + fan? hehe...

Actually, it happens to cross my mind before regarding HD, whether should they be be protected by fan. On the whole, I guess not, since the hardware is quite robust to temperature, unlike processors, which usually get fried at high speed (or overclocked). Fan for HD is just redundant.

The fan comes with HD enclosure, so why not lol

really? lol... never seen one like that. Is it a 2.5" enclosure or a 5.25" enclosure? I would believe the latter will require fan instead of the smaller one.

Should show a picture of that!

Sure this is an example. On this pic you can see the fan system: http://www.kingwin.com/products/TL-Series/tl9big.jpg

I am confuse perhaps we are not talking about the same thing lol

I can see what you are driving at.
We are probably talking about the same thing, but slightly on a different context - the HD enclosure that you are showing is meant for casing; that is, internal hard disk drives, whereas what I am showing is for external drive, connection via USB

HD Enclosure $30 + Shipping.. so say $37.

New, WD 250GB SATA HD. $99, Free Shipping.
Free-up an internal IDE port, now use your spare inside and don't spend $30 or $20 on extra parts

Personally, I have a $30 enclosure and use it to access data on all my old HDs. If the HD is 3+ years old it gets the data removed, burned, and the HD is thrown away, I'm not risking my "backup data" on an old HD.

Data can be classified into various kinds. Personally, I know that data are invaluable, more than the hardware itself. Of course, when dealing with sensitive data, you won't want to backup on old HD. However, let's say you have old archived files which you won't bear to delete them, but would still want to have them archived, you can always store them up in these old HD drives. In a way, there is a risk factor involved. So, in case if the HD went dead, it's not the end of the world.
