unable to connect

why can't I establish a connection to the server at www.google.com using Firefox?

Just to clarify, Internet Explorer connects fine.

thanks,

There is an outside chance this could be malware/virus/Trojan at work.

However, first .... you say you can't get to google.com in FF but how is your browsing in general with FF? Can you get anywhere at all on the web with FF? Other search engines perhaps? Websites?

If you aren't connecting using Firefox but IE works well I would suspect that a malware/virus/Trojan like oddjob mentioned.

I'm wondering if you are using any proxy on that browser (if so you might have messed up the settings, if not see above).

I would make sure my virus and spyware definitions are up to date (download Ad-Aware, AVG Free Antivirus if you don't) then run a scan and find the bug.

First off do you have any antivirus or spyware detection software?

Some that you can get if you don't are:

Ad-Aware
Spy Bot Search & Destroy
AVG Antivirus
Spyware Doctor

(All Free)

Then just scan your computer and the software should be able to find the bug and then you can just delete it.

1) Have you noticed any other performance problems with your PC?
2) Have you downloaded anything recently (or when you first starting finding out the problem) that may have contained the virus (I would delete those file(s)).

My Recommendation

My Initial recommendation would be to clear all your cookies and browser cache. This can be done in Firefox by going:
Tools->Clear Privacy Data-> and check mark all the boxes. Once you click "Clear Priacy Data Now" close all your Firefox browsers.

Try again to goto google. If this hasn't helped then the adware/trojan possibility is most likely what your issue is.

Goto download.com and get one of these free tools:
Avast - Free Virus Scanner (Assuming you dont have one or it has expired)
Ad-aware 2007 (Clean The Adware)

These 2 tools combined will get rid of just about anything after they have been properly updated.

Hope this helps your problem.

Couple of thoughts.

I have heard of folk having "trouble" with the latest version of FF, v 2.0.0.7. Me ... I'm sticking with 2.0.0.6 for the time being.

Have you tried removing/uninstalling FF completely from your system then downloading/re-installing a fresh copy of v 2.0.0.6? Maybe this will help.

If not, and you want to investigate possible malware infections, you should do this systematically. Although the above suggestions are all good the approach is a little "scattergun".

At this point, if you are still having trouble, try this procedure to start you off ....

Run some first line (free) removal programs. These four ...

1. Superantispyware > http://www.superantispyware.com/

2. AVG Anti Spyware > http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=asf

3. TrojanHunter > http://www.misec.net/

Download each, update them to the latest definitions, and have them run full scans on your entire systems on their default settings.

Let them fix whatever they find.

4. ComboFix >
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...a/ComboFix.exe

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
Note >> Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. The report is called ComboFix.txt. Make sure you save this log.

Next download Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 here ……

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...HJTInstall.exe
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your next post.

DO NOT use the ”AnalyseThis” button. Its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.

DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

Post the logs from ComboFix and HiJackThis in your next reply along AND an update on how the computer is operating now.
