IBM's $100,000 million Roadrunner achieved performance of 1. 026 petaflop/s-becoming the first supercomputer ever to reach that performance milestone. At the same time, Roadrunner is also one of the most energy efficient systems.

What are they going to run on that supercomputer: a simulated version of earth? A climate model of the solar system? A perfect model of a protein molecule or DNA sequence?

That's a whole lot of power but it needs to be used for something.

Roadrunner was the most fastest computer. Blue Gene/L is also the fastest supercomputer in the world peaking at 360 Teraflops by using 65,536 processors and runs a scaled down version of Linux. It is a collaborative project among IBM, Lawrence Livermore Labs, and the US Dept. of Energy.
