Of course there are errors, but Microsoft have the most-used Operating Systems, the most used Office suite and so on, there are going to be more problems because there are more people using them for different reasons and getting errors for any number of reasons, the majority of them are usually user errors because they have done something wrong.
Visual Studio has been a brilliant package for me, as had Windows Defender, there may be better programs out there for programming C++ or detecting spyware but people fail to realise the scrutiny that Microsoft are under.
By popularity a Microsoft product is more known than an open-source product because of it's comapnies name, therefore if both products work the same, run the same and have the same errors, then the Microsoft product is going to be slammed because Microsoft have created it, but Open Source programs are just as good without Microsofts name.
I agree that Microsoft could strive to make everything better, especially Vista, however you can not generalise that Microsoft are a bunch of failures, because they have been on top for far too long to be a disappointing company.

The arguement of the number of user is not really fair in the almost monopolistic situation of microsoft
and a high number of user in this kind of situation doesn't necessarly mean quality
but i didn't intend to say that all MS do is crap but you are usually disapointed by what they have to offer at the end , especially when you think about the promesses they made at the begining
