How do you make your website load faster?

I am having trouble with my website's load time, its amazingly slow. It is formed from sliced up images from photoshop. When I "saved for web" I used a very low quality gif, and am still having trouble.

Someone mentioned CSS sprites, can anyone explain it, or how it could help?

I also heard something about compressing the images, is their any way to do that successfully?

Also, I heard something about entering the image height and width box, but it seems Photoshop already did that?
