Is Flash Object simply a .swf file integrated in a web page using object oriented layout?

No, it's (more or less) a movie that can (or can not) be interactive. SWF file is the final result of the program setup on a Adobe flash program. (.fla program)
It has no control over any other part of the page.

The main reason (I believe) that people use flash is because of it condensing of file size without losing quality. You can take a file that is 100mb and shrink it to 8mb and not lose quality.

Flash can be used to embed video in web pages. The technique is to create a flash file (.swf) that acts as a player for the video file.
