Learn to code by hand. Start off small learn HTML. Move up to adding CSS to that. Once you have those two things down perfectly then move on to maybe Javascript for your cool effects. Once you have those down you can move onto server side languages like PHP or ASP. Thats when you can start building websites that provide actual function like this forum does.

Agreed. Get a simple text editor and go for it. HTML is not that difficult.
As far as a learning avenue, there are hundreds of tutorials on the web or just a good book. Again, the books are as many as the tutorials. Check out Amazon. Some ofthe better books I feel are Visual Quickstart Guides, or anything from Sitepoint. I think I learned from a Learn HTML in 24 Hours or something like that. As easy as HTML is I think it would be hard to find anything that is just downright wrong.
If you want a good price, Amazon.com is the way.
LVS Online/ is an inexpensive yet decent on-line school. I think it's like $25 a course.

I would recommend a good html editor which allows you to just click to a button (for example for a table, a link or a image) and see what happens (what code is inserted). This way you can easily learn to work with such kind of tools and see what code is used for what items on a html page. Ace html is a good free choice - and there is a lot of others.

The only problem with this is one needs to be diligient enough to study what code is produced. It's to esay to just click the button and let it rip. Especially when one is in a hurry.

In my opinion, the best way to learn is by doing.
It's much easier to retain whatever you need if you actually have to think about it as you are typing it out.
Not to mention, you are forced to fix whatever mistakes you make and thus you become even more familiar with the code.
