I would suggest a macbook pro with adobe web pro. IMO fonts and colors are easier to handle on a mac.

Well this really all depends on a budget to be honest.
I mean as web development and designer, he won't need TO large of a machine, as far as gaming requirements, unless he plans on hosting from his laptop and using it as a server environment for testing purposes, or if he is using it for video editing.
Now, if he plans on using it as video editing and hosting, then go with one that has a higher end RAM (Memory) this is really important as well as a nice processor speed.
If he is doing video editing then go with a very nice video card that has dedicated memory and not shared.

For me HP has a good reputation in the media world, partly because the machines are good and partly because they work hard to make sure that they support Avid - which is great software but quite picky about what hardware it runs on. At the higher end, along with HP you might consider a specilist like Boxx, who will configure and supply a CS system to suit you, if you like the prices

i cant say what exact notebook is for you..as a web developer.. We all have specific different power(spec) cravings when it comes to our very own personal notebook..
but here is a link of notebook reviews that may help you decide which notebook fits you well..

I recommend Dell XPS M1330, not because it's my laptop but because it has really amazing features and a really large HD space advisable for web enthusiast or developer or just a gamer like me hehe

Hey people! thanks for the amazing responses! so it still seems even huh anyways macbooks seem to be gaining an edge! awesome!!! Honestly I like the macbooks looks its too good.. the backlit keyboard and the trackpad and the aluminum casing.. just too good to resist. Dells not bad... But the macbooks sleeker, lighter and its so unique! take for instance the magnetic power chord! whoaaaaa ... i also saw this student offer from them and i think they do offer some cool discounts at http://www.apple.com/in/students/ the icing on the cake!

i am not a mac person period, but your choices vs Budget, leaves you with three options
one, Macbook pro, its runs all you need fast and well, the equvialent in vista well you can get models from HP, Lenovo, dell which will do the job quite well too, but
make sure you have 4gb of memory, 160gb hard drive a graphics card "so its not relying on ur cpu and memory"
and a intel core duo or better 2.2ghz or more
in short the cheapest will be about 800£ from dell, followed about the same from hp, then lenovo then mac
if your comfy with a mac, then go mac, if not buy a dell laptop note with dell, if you where to upgrade the memory yourself you wont invalidate the warrenty this can save you a lot of money on memory
personally i do all my work via desktop computer and only use a laptop to show a client the website or e-commerce packages, hell most of my work these days, is simply to advise clients on what there IT needs are,

If your talking about the latest version of these laptop then I'll go for either Apple Macbook or DELL XPS. But if you want pure power that you can get from both of them then you should go for the DELL XPS. You can never go wrong if you pick DELL XPS. DELL has acquired Alienware so you can be assured that DELL will offer you the power you need in high end web developing.

seriously you dont need a xps to do highend webdesign, a xps is a overpriced overspeced piece of kit, that is really meant for gaming freaks
I have worked for dell, and while i have no problem with using certain pieces of kit, and even recommend specific laptops from them, i can not see the justification of using a gaming rig such as that of a xps for web design, there is nothing high end enought in the webdesign field that needs that much power, and the xps is only as reliable as the warrenty so unless you got 3k worth to spend the xps is simply not worth it

My choice isn't on the list but Sony Vaio gets my vote.
It's the most amazing laptop I've ever worked on and it can handle multiple design programs at once very easily. You should definitely consider it.

I am a big fan of Dell and so I will go with either a Dell XPS or an Apple mac. Web designers after all need to be picky when it comes to choosing laptops or netbooks.

The new Macbook pro or a Sony Vaio would get my vote.
The Macs are built for designers and OS X is an excellent operating system. The Macs can also run Windows if you really need to under bootcamp or at the same time as OSX using Parallels or VMWare. The latest Macbooks aren't that bad on price.
Does he really need a laptop? We use iMacs for web development. If we have to be mobile, we take a netbook for presentations / demonstrations.

I would personally choose Mac if I have the budget. But Dell XPS I think is better and way cheaper than any other brand on that list.
