private page on my domain?

How do I create a private page on my domain with dreamweaver 8?

I want to have a page that has no links to it from my main page for private info.

I am guessing that it would be something like www.maindomain.com/private

I am a newbie so sorry if this is not the right forum to post this.

Matt

It is really easy. Make sure when you create it, you create it blank b/c if you use a template to create it, the page will hve links to other pages. Just create a blank page maybe in a directory called "private" - however you will have to make sure you take steps to stop search engines to not index your page if you really want to keep it private.

If I understand you, I would create a new directory in my root directory call "private" for example. Then in the private directory I would create a page. Correct?

There would be no links to it so it would be private because nobody would know the address.

How do I take steps to keep the search engines from indexing it?

Thank you

Matt

It's my understanding that it would automatically be private (unindexed) since nothing is pointing to or from it. Don't link to it, and the page(s) won't be found by anyone.

Not sure about DW but just create the page and ftp it to the server. Not linking to it will help prevent it being indexed but is no guarantee that it wont be. Adding noindex nofollow to the meta tags will help but again no guarantee. I have experienced unlinked pages being indexed and still don't know how it happened.

Password protecting it using php will greatly reduce the chances.

No matter what you do I would suggest that no sensitive information be placed on a page that is on a live server.

I'm with Scriptman on this one.

The no index, no follow, tags will help as mentioned but they are only as good as the search engine reading them. Some less reputable search engines completely ignore it.

If your using Cpanel, you can also put this file into it's own directory, and then password protect the directory.
Cpanel has a feature that will add the appropriate lines to your htaccess for you automatically.

If your not using Cpanel and arent sure what to add to the htaccess file, give a shout.
