Height you design for?
What pixel height do you design for? When you design a page, what is the height that you have in mind for the finished product.

That depends on the site. I never plan a height ahead of time. I let the page stretch with the content.

I want to design a portal. I want to have a header on top. Below that a area with the cat's and another area to the right of cat's. I want the categories to go in a scrolling div. The area to the right of the cat's will have a scrolling text area - actually an iframe that scrolls text- that presents information. Then below all this a footer. I want to design it all to fit within the height of a viewers screen - no longer. So, I need to figure the sixes for the iframe and the scrolling div

Be careful what you ask for! I might include you in a future poll.

Well, I would say design with 800x600 res in mind, but remember that the viewable area in their browser won't be 600 px high. You have to account for the toolbars and taskbar.

if you go 750 x 420 you cover most browsers, you might consider making the with even less because some users use the sidebars in diff. browsers

There is a chart somewhere, but I believe 748px wide is the safest to use for a page to fit 800 res in different browsers.

For the height I usually just make the psd 700-800 pc high, but then I cut it/add to it as I need...

well I concider 'above the fold' to be the front page of the home page, created for inbetween 800x600 and 1024x768 sizes, and the rest of the page does flow on forever (not too far) below the fold.

The exact dimensions of IE's client area are 766 by 459 (the white space where pages are displayed); IE is maximized and the resolution is 800 by 600, no extra toolbars installed in IE. This is after subracting 34 pixels of the right scrollbar (default in windows apps, at least thouse using Win32 API libraries). However, 2 pixels need to be further subtracted from the 766 to make sure no horizontal scrollbar will be displayed. So I would suggest that 764 is absolute maximum width, but still, it may be living dangerously depending on some other issues, such as table borders around the page.
As for the height, I don't think there is a rule. Much depends on the nature of the site. If, for instance, you post items such as news or bulletin boards there is really little you can do to control the height.
