Good luck at it!,your project sounds very interesting.
At the hosting I am they "gave me" a shopping cart(I haven't used it yet) though I have to register it at www.agora.com (not so sure of it)

We totally customized OsCommerce. It's open and free. It's not live yet, but is working.

I've used this one for a little over a year. Really affordable and has some good features.

It's perl, though. I know most of you guys around here swear by PHP.

Site looks good too... I like features too Just think of the man hours that were spent writing that web app. It has almost all functionality an online store would want. But with out the price.
IMO one of the most impressive Open Source CMS systems. The database structure is also well designed and thought out. I use it any chance I get.

I just switched to Oscommerce at the beginning of this month. http://www.mixedgoods.com I like the community contributions, many mods you can do to change the script.
I'm getting ready to change how the cart works, I really don't care for how many clicks it takes to buy something.

I like Miva Merchant in combination with OpenUI.
Many web-hosting companies bundle Miva Merchant in their eCommerce packages.
Although Miva Merchant alone works well, the addition of OpenUI adds total customization to the store. OpenUI allows 3rd party drop-in modules to satisfy individual needs (including SEO modules).
There are over 10,000 stores online that use Miva Merchant with OpenUI.
For more information, you should visit http://www.openui.org to read more.
To see web-hosting with Miva Merchant, visit http://www.olm.net/ecommerce/ensim/
Hope that helps...

I'm working on a totally customized version of OS commerce now.. You won't even recognize. The client is an artist so I have to get on the fancy side. I'm going to have all the categories on the right side of the page and a nav menu on the left... I'll post when I'm finished.

In my opinion open source is best for this. Since its open, programmers all around can contribute to making it more secure. (::cough :: linux :: cough : I wouldnt throw out the option of an open source program because they are often just as or even more secure then paid programs.
 My opinion though.

Here's a project I'm working on now. I have customized the menus yet, but I am using OS Commerce.
So far I have only edited the header and footer, but just by doing this, it give the site its own theme...
