Putting map location on site?
I am thinking of putting a map to my location on my hosting site. Reason for this would be to make people feal that I am a more legitamete business than some others. Only problem is that it would be directly to where I live. Is this a good iidea or not? I need all the input I can get thanks.
P.s Also I just thought of something else i could instead not put to where I live but the zip code of this town so that would appear on the map. That would not be much differant than putting my location in this forum. Please post your thoughts.
Thanks, Doc

I don't think a map is necessary on a hosting site. They are only useful if you need to let customers know how to find your building. I'd stick with a simple address on the site.

If you want people to visit you, create a seperate page called driving directions and put up a map and the driving directions from several point around town. Then if someone ever did want to visit you, you could point them to that page. However, I feel that most people would not want to visit you and would prefer to handle things via email or over the phone. Ofcoure, if someone has a disagreement with you they will know exactly where you live! You might get a rude visit in the middle of the night. I would just stick with a contact form on your site for now. If you want, you could put up an ICQ thing on your site. Much safer. If you had a real office instead of working out of your house, an address would look better. Might scare people away knowing that you work out of your house. Who would you trust for your hosting needs a person working out of their house or some hosting business on main street?
Just my 2cents.

Ok I did put a map to the town I live in. Do you think folks will notice that I didnt put it to my exact location? What are you thoughts on this?

A map to your town is completely pointless and will just make you seem weird - IMO.

Hmm, I actually think some sort of map isn't a bad idea. Maybe not in a showcase position, but somewhere in the "About Us" pages you could have a subtle link.
I while ago I wanted to find the exact location of our servers and a map would have been handy.

I think a physical address is enough to make the business appear legit, but I also think a link to a map wouldn't hurt and might be useful for some people.
I've been meaning to put a map to my office on our business website for those wanting to find us.

Only problem is I do this out of my Apt. I dont want folks getting the idea when they first see the site that it is some kid doing it though.

No, that wouldn't be helpful. Maybe just a map pointing to your town.
Don't just take my word for it though. Personally I like to know where my sites are hosted (I can point to my servers on a map), but others like Jazzee will think you're weird

Well I wasnt really talking about my servers although that might be handy as well. Mainly for the customers to atleast see the general area where I live so that get disctinct "feel of presance" for my biz.

What?
I ask because dave conz seems to think it's a good idea to have the map to show people where the servers are. But, that's not where the servers will be.

No I meant originally putting a map to the town where I live not the servers. He just threw the other as extra in or maybe misunderstood. Anyways I guess yall did get a little confused.

I didn't get confused and I still think it's a bad idea. Maybe you could say where the servers are located, but you really really don't need a map of the town you live in on your hosting site.

aye i'm with sara still, it just seems strange, and certainly makes it seem like a one-person company, which isn't how you want to come across is it?
