A good web design would attract visitors but if you do not promote the site no one will see the good web design.

Having a good web design will get the visitor interested in browsing around the site a little longer or purchase whatever they came there forum. I stay away from poorly designed sites because i think the owner plans on not investing money into there site and most likley will not be around for awhile. Usually the good sites are here for the long haul so i'll keep on visiting that site to satisfy my needs.

This just my

Some of the most popular websites on the internet have mediocre designs (craigslist anyone?). If it's information that your website provides, I don't see design having a huge impact (as long as it's a practical design and quality information).

The simple site the better. Phpbb and craigslist sites are good example.

Yes, it would be one technique to attract visitors but it's not always a determining factor. It would depend on what your target audience expects. If done well then they will spread the word.

As others have mentioned, if you don't provide the content the visitors are looking for, it doesn't matter how "pretty" your site is.

The Myth of Beautiful Website Design

Technically designs have no factor and SEO impact with regards on getting traffic and ranking well to google. IMO, having good design could only be a possible factor only for returning visitors. As having a better design compared to a competitor website that also offers the same content, service and quality would give your website a higher chance of having returning visits.

Good looking website designs are indeed very appealing to the eyes of visitors because of their animations, interactivity and sophisticated web environment. But there is a good chance that it may affect your website seo friendly factors especially turning it into a flash-based website, where in your entire website is composed of flash. Eventually, leading for you website to loose potential website traffic.

First you need to bring visitors on your site and this will be done only through online promotion/internet marketing techniques. After this ofcourse a good website design will force your visitors to go through different pages of the site.

Your design should be something that is easy on the eyes. It has to be clean. People doesn't like websites that are too messy and does not have any color scheme or something.
But of course, if you want to attract more visitors, you also need how to do Search Engine Optimization.

If you have a good web design then you can make the visitor to stay longer.
I don't think it will bring any extra traffic.

Good looking sites with good contents always make your visitors come back again. So of course, good design is beneficial.

Good structure and a properly optimised site can help to improve search engine position for you keywords and there by help to drive more traffic.

A well designed site can reduce bounce rate and improve conversion rates from the visitors who find your site.

Web designing plays an important role to attract the visitor but before that atleast visitors should know that such site exist to and for that you need to promote your site, without that nothing is possible.

It depends on these factors, IMO:

1.) If your site is beautifully yet heavily designed in Flash, you're basically saying "Go away!" to your visitors.
2.) If your site has good design but is spammed with ads, you're also basically saying "Go away!" to your visitors.
3.) If your site has good design but intensely used large-size graphic elements, you're basically kicking an ancient vase on this one.

Basically, you have got to balance the elements in your site for the conversion rate to increase. As much as possible, try to minimize the size of every graphical presentation you use yet maximize the design, optimize action scripts, etc. There are a lot of what you should do to improve your site. Try to consult Google on that.

HTH.
