& question about FrontPage special directories

Hello!

Could someone please explain me what are exactly the _vti directories in FrontPage? What are they for?

Why we need them? because a simple website made with FP seems to work absolutely properly without uploading those directories.

And why do they contain a copy of all files in the upper directory?

I use FP only for its great picture gallery, otherwise I use Dreamweaver MX.

Thanks in advance for your much appreciated clear answers.
Joanie

I'm pretty sure I've got this right - it's been a long time since I've used FP.

They perform various functions but mainly they keep track of the times files are updated so the automated publish commands can tell which files to upload. All those other folders with funny names are used by the FP extensions for various things from security to form handling.

As long as you're not using FP extensions (and unless you're a masochist you won't be), it's safe to delete them.

Hey

Thanks, that's the kind of answer I wanted to get.

Clear explanations... and I don't need to upload them when I FTP the files to my server, just great

But I realised I better keep the _themes one, because the pages won't display properly if I don't. Right?

Sincerely,
Joanie

I didn't know a question about FP directories should be placed in the Web Design Lobby. How did my thread get there?

I would suggest uploading all the folders. Also the first time you upload I would use the FP publish setting. Incase of any weird FP files for extensions. After the first public you should be ok to FTP files.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I published the first time 2-3 days ago; the special FP folders seemed to be pretty slow to upload. As I can see the hidden folders I think I published everything there was to publish. Also I use FP only for the picture galleries, otherwise I use Dreamweaver MX.

In fact I have just deleted all FP special folders on my website, except the theme folder, and checked the website. It looks OK, everything is working well.

By the way, in case you're interested, the site is located here: http://www.lavydunoyer.com , but it's in French, lots of family pictures.
