Did you get talked into a website design that equates to a ego/vanity site?

what I often find on corporate, famous brand web sites. There seems to be this arrogance that says, “We have the brand. We don’t need to optimize. Who cares if people come.”...

The You-Don’t-Matter Website (A Look At Ego/Vanity Sites)
Yes a ego/vanity based site can be successful but they spend lots of money using other avenues to attract attention.
It would be so much easier to build a site that is attractive (keeps sales/branding people happy), usable (keeps the visitors coming back and spread the word what a fabulous site you have - incoming links! social proof!) and search engine friendly (equates to not as hard to be found for less money).
