Jpeg vs Bitmap Import

I import graphics files I make into flash. I used to save these image files as JPEG before importing.
I then thought hey, why not use bitmaps... becuase the quality is better and the exported movie size shouldnt be bigger becuase flash renders its own image out from the imported file right?
So I did a test: 2 files, same picture, same attributes, 1 bitmap+ 1 jpeg.
I imported the jpeg, placed image from the library onto the movie scene, export the movie. do exactly the same with the bitmap.
I expected to see both movies the same size as i thought flash renders its own image out from the imported graphics, or maybe even the bitmap import movie bigger becuase the quality of the image was better so the image rendered out might be higher quality and bigger. But i didnt expect to find the jpeg as bigger in size?
i did the same test with another picture and the movie with jpeg imported is always bigger. but being jpeg is worse quality then the bitmap one.
Am i missing something here? im pretty confused.
someone please enlighten me.
thankyou

This is just a guess, but it could be that Flash will render the bitmap file to a lower quality then your jpg.

So say the bitmap is 10/10 to start with (in terms of quality)
the jpg could be 7/10

Once the bitmap is rendered by flash it could be down to 5/10

But because the jpg is already compressed flash over looks it and therefore the size is going to be bigger because the quality is better then your bitmap...

I hope all that makes sence. And yer, it was just a guess to why there could be the different file sizes.

OK here's what i know about all this jazz..JPEG files have a diferent algorythm for being creatd than Bitmaps so that will kinda determine the size...I think...but as far quality goes a bitmap is ALWAYS better than a jpg because it is a loss-less format. jpgs try to save size by removing what "The eye can't see" that's a load of crapp... we all see it.

jpegs work great, you can set the qualtiy of the jpeg in flash as well. Just make sure it isnt crappy before import...

Although jpegs are the standard as far as HTML go i still prefer gifs or png which are both bitmaps and loss-less, bmp is also a bitmap but it is microsoft specific so i shudder to think that anyone still uses it.
