Has anyone mentioned site compression? I agree images and flash slow down sites but I also found that gzip compression helps alot aswell.

Reduce CSS? CSS is pretty minimal by default. I'd say what needs to come down are images, number of links, amount of coding in general though this is secondary to images. It isn't just the size of images, it's the number of them. The images should come from as few sources as possible, if you host your own site you should host all your images on the same server as well. That gives a web page less different domains that it has to pull information from.

I'll have to disagree with you on this. You use the best image file format for the job. .jpg is for photos. .gif and .png are for graphics. .png can also be used for photos but you have to decide which gives better results and at what file size.

Using the correct type of web graphic which has been optimized for optimum download speed and web hosting space conservation will affect the performance of the website. Sites containing lots of images will be slow to load and require more web hosting space.
