A friend of mine would like to exhibit some of his pictures. Can I give him some space on my website? He doesn't want his own domain or anything, just a place to post his graphics. I thought I'd just do a link from my opening page to his page. There is not a technical problem, but is this sort of unofficial subdomain stuff against ICANN rules or looked down upon as unethical, etc?

So you want a page, on your website, with some pictures of your friend, right ?

ICANN is the Internet committee for domain names. Many places give out free subdomains. That is not a problem. What you should worry about are the rules at your hosting company. If you can you might want to create a subdomain for your friend. This would be fred.flintstone.rbl. Where fred is the subdomain. Also you might want to worry about bandwidth usage by your friend. Graphics can use a lot of bandwidth.

You should be fine from a legal stand point. If it's adult material you will need to hold some data on file to be in accordance with the law. Like others have said disk space and bandwidth for a lot of images or highly visited page/images is something esle to think about.
