301 redirect

I currently have about 32 redirects (301) in my .htaccess file on the server, which has built up over the years from moved or deleted pages etc.

Someone once said that you should not have too many 301 redirects in the .htaccess file but I have just deleted several pages and moved some old pages.

Does anyone know if there is a maximum amount of 301's that can be placed in the .htaccess file or is there no limit?

Thanks for any replies

Your .htaccess file should be processed quickly, assuming you have a host that is not oversold. Hundreds of redirects are possible without issues. 32 redirects is a small number and I would not be concerned with this.

That is a great news!

The server is dedicated and is pretty high spec, so it should not be a problem.

Thanks for the answer

i do not think there is a limit, and if your box is dedi then go crazy. the only concern would be the file size / load time of the .htaccess. And that shouldn't be a big deal either, as an example I have about 50-60 ip addresses Im blocking in a .htaccess on a shared box without problems; this example also has a cache, twenty or so rewrites and some more fluff for a file size of around 14kb.

Thanks, I just checked mine and it is only 7kb and that includes the code to prevent people from hotlinking to my images. My mind is more at ease now.
Thanks for the replies

Id agree.

That should be more then a fine number.
I would say keep it between 50-100.

If its a shared server, you may see some issues later if the host oversells.
Otherwise you should be good, alternative is buy your own dedicated server and gain full control :p

Should not be a problem with loads of 301's.

If you do what you can through you cpanel then it won't even be on the access file.

I have 100 redirects on one of my sites and there are no issues. I guess less is more, but for SEO purposes, you don't want to lose any rank/value of an old page.
