This. I also use a grid system when I'm laying out the site in Photoshop. It helps me keep everything proportional and lets me see what's above the fold.

On bigger projects I'll use Komodo Edit instead of Notepad++ (interesting note: I found Komodo Edit because I was using Ubuntu at the time and it was one of the few IDEs that worked excellently cross-platform). Komodo Edit just feels better. I used to use Eclipse but it felt too sluggish.

I started creating Drupal sites recently and it requires editing a ton of different files to get the result I need. That might change my approach, but so far Komodo Edit works great.

Does anyone use any CSS frameworks? I like some of the ideas (variables, clearer syntax for complicated selectors, etc.), but a lot of them just look too fat for development applications.

dreamweaver made it easy to develop websites without any special knowledge. I started using it when i started designing websites and i love it. before that i was using visual studio. but found dreamweaver more flexible.

Photoshop and Dreamweaver don't teach you how to design wesites. You have to know how to use these tools plus, for Dreamweaver you need to know how to fix your code when it doesn't do what you want it to do.

In other news, despite my abhorrence of it, I've actually heard a good thing or two about Dreamweaver. Are there any features that make it even somewhat attractive? Honestly, laying out a website with defunct, horrible code isn't a feature.

But I could see it having some features above and beyond what my little notepad++ might have.

There are a few buttons you can push that produce ok code but ya still have to know how to style the code and troubleshoot when things go sour.

Dreamweaver can actually be pretty useful as it gives coding suggestions when you need them----------

I use Photoshop to design the webpage and how it should look or feel. (Sometimes Paint.NET).
I then save all the parts to an images folder and make a workable HTML site. I normally use Notepad++ because its free and has great syntax highlighting. As a student on dreamspark I have free access to other tools like Expression Web 4, which I think is a nice because it has a super all browser preview thing. Its also good when working with PHP
